I love, love, LOVE this lady's work and I'm certainly not going to boycott the Beach Boys, but this breaks my heart.
One of all my time favorite bassists, the legendary Carol Kaye is BoogalooWakaWakaMumboJumbo CrayCray, and to make matters worse, her rant is a poorly written mess filled with half truths, false assumptions, and out and out lies.

(11,295 posts)it's your post -- but, in today's environment, I think I would have gone with "complete flake."
'N it's always a disappointment to find out someone we admire for their skills .. is not really somebody we'd chose as a neighbor (or family member). Sigh.

(11,295 posts)Unconventional. Outside the box. Non-linear. I can think of a lot of descriptors I'd use before going to shallow or gullible.

Not sure if she's a T-Humper, but prolly, I spose.
Plus, Carol Kaye played on a lotta stuff besides the Beach Boys, and, like you, I will continue to listen to those tunes too.
If I were gonna "boycott" the Beach Boys - whatever that means - it would be because of Mike Love.

(9,988 posts)I remember interviewing her for a zine in the early 90s and was thrilled to just be in her presence.
She wasn't like that then. At the time, she was a big union activist. She worked for Wal-Mart, and was up front about their abusive labor policies. I don't know what happened. I guess maybe the Fox News mindworm got her.
She and John Cale are the only original VU members left alive. (He is definitely NOT a Trump fan). It's very sad.

(8,922 posts)Damn good bass player, but sure drank the Fox News Kool-Aid in her golden years.

(9,822 posts)Shes from the old school - lots of reactionary people in that age group. Im guessing plenty of other Wrecking Crew players are wingers.

(8,922 posts)If she played on a particular record then that's that, but there is material on youtube about her recording sessions that are about her and Wrecking Crew session musicians specifically.

(5,928 posts)She's the studio musician who played bass on a huge number of hits in the 1960's, from the "Batman" theme to the Grassroots' "Midnight Confessions to...well, the list goes on and on.

(25,586 posts)At a certain point the musical ambition of The Beach Boys exceeded the ability of most of the members, so session musicians took care of a lot of the recordings. Shes probably most famous for that, but shes on a shedload of records from back in the day.

(2,220 posts)well...student..I followed her on FB for several years. I noticed that her posts slowly started devolving into random unhinged rants about how people hadnt treated her right or honored her brilliance. She was furious about The Wrecking Crew movie. Hell, she was furious about everything. I decided a few years ago that she must have some mental health issues and unfollowed her.

(744 posts)Though I don't buy into her hype .. She is very good. She has toured with Steve Vai and Guthire Govan .. And has collaborated with Jordan Rudess ( I was heartbroken to learn John Petrucci is Trump Supporter)
Her solo begins around 1.57

(36,415 posts)She's 85 and bitter about a ton of stuff, and people; she thinks she got short changed. I studied The Wrecking Crew ten ways to Tuesday, and followed up on a lot of the artists featured. Carol Kaye was one of them; she has a substantial YouTube footprint. I came to realize there was always an undercurrent of anger festering inside of her, and there were things she would not talk about.
She has had issues for a LONG time.

(5,648 posts)I was a FB friend, and I remember when the Wrecking Crew movie was released, she "drunk dial" posted about how Hal Blaine couldn't keep time to save his life and how Denny Tedesco was an egomaniac. It was incoherent and rambling, like this post. If only she knew how important she is to popular music. I wish she wasn't angry at the wrong people.
Brother Buzz
(36,415 posts)Two instruments generally keep time to a song: The drums or the bass. And some songs dictate the bass lead, but Mr. ego, Hal could never, even do that. Ironically, Earl Palmer, who got Hal Blaine started, intuitively knew when to pass it to the bassist, and more times then not, it was Carol. Earl and Carol were tight, and I'm guessing it pissed Carol off that Hal's ego and relentless 'self promoting' sorta walked all over Earl's turf. And the kicker was, when Earl Palmer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he told the powers that be that Hal should be inducted, too. How's THAT for being a team player with an ego totally in check?
Denny Tedesco was just being Tedesco, the class clown. The entire Wrecking Crew had egos, and I'm guessing Tedesco's high jinx simple rubbed Carol the wrong way. It is what it is.
I guess we'll never know for sure, but the musicologists claim Earl Palmer recorded a lot more than Hal Blaine ever did. And to think he did all that session work just so he could afford to play Jazz drums, his genuine passion.

(5,648 posts)Impressed with his own drum kit.
Brother Buzz
(36,415 posts)Mr. Ego, Hal Blaine could with his monster steroid drum kit.
Hal actually had two of these wheeled kits, both labeled "B" (that's another self promoting story), and had a permanent driver who hopscotched them from one studio to another.

RW Hate Radio and Fox News are powerful brainwashing tools, and they work on a lot of people, particularly as they age.

(6,039 posts)Carol probably isn't as busy of musician any more being an octogenarian. This si a perfect setting for Rush, Sean and company. Carol got hooked. A long time friend of mine had the same scenario and he was brainwashed too.
I'd like to remember her for her accomplishments though, and there are many.
