PORTLAND, Maine (AP) A rural church wedding and reception on a beautiful day in the shadow of Mount Katahdin was no doubt a happy day. But it has spread misery ever since.
That single event on Aug. 7 is linked to outbreaks in at least two other locations in Maine, with more than 170 people contracting the virus and seven deaths since.
Dr. Nirav Shah, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control, said the single event has the power to undo much of the states progress during the pandemic. The virus can become the uninvited guest at every single wedding, party or event in Maine, he warned.
The super spreader event started with wedding attendees in the Katahdin region and spread to the community at large and to a nursing home in Madison. An attendee worked at the York County Jail, 220 miles (355 kilometers) away, where there are more than 70 cases. The state is also investigating an outbreak at a church in Sanford, home of the weddings officiant.
None of those who died actually attended the wedding and reception. The first of the deaths was reported in Millinocket, where no one has tested positive for several weeks, the town manager said Wednesday. Six other deaths were residents of Maplecrest Rehabilitation and Living Center in Madison.

(15,936 posts)I'm so happy for them and their selfishness!
I hope they are aware of the pain and suffering they are causing.
Just like the gender party burning down California selfish people.

My niece is getting married in October with in-person guests. It's in another state and we will NOT be attending. She understood, but happily informed me they were planning to live stream it. No, thanks! I won't be watching others sign their death warrants.

(22,114 posts)couples getting married can put aside their desires to have the perfect wedding when things get much better for all. In their haste to 'proclaim' their love for each other and have witnesses, they're going to expose others, possibly causing illness and death. Is this really what they want as a reminder of their wedding day?
Selfish.

(1,671 posts)state of most guests on her side (I don't know about his side). It's also a state that hasn't really had covid under control. She grew up in a very religious and very Pollyanna-ish household. Even so, she's a college graduate with a STEM degree. She should be able to tamp down her expectations for the wedding of her dreams with the reality of a pandemic.

(22,114 posts)those who have lost loved ones because of your ignorance and desire to have the 'perfect' wedding still, in these dire times and tribulations.
Are they insane? All of those responsible should be held liable and made to pay for everyone's medical bills (of those coming down with the CV spread as a result of their actions), or sued.
Here's what the moron said (the pastor):
Bell continued to hold services in Sanford and bristled over attacks aimed at him on social media. In one sermon, he urged people to put their trust in God over government and questioned the wisdom of masks, likening their effectiveness to a chain-link fence trying to keep out mosquitoes.
