Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey spends big to help GOP candidates as Democrats seek control of Legislature

Clashes over business closures, face masks and the state's social safety net have made for some rocky relationships between Gov. Doug Ducey and Republican lawmakers this year.

But when it comes to November's legislative races — and the Democrats nipping at the heels of Republicans in both chambers — Ducey is putting party first.

Two political action committees associated with the governor spent nearly $200,000 over the past three months trying to help the GOP hold on to seats in legislative districts Democrats believe they can flip, campaign finance records show.

Arizonans for Strong Leadership, which uses independent expenditures to influence competitive legislative races, was responsible for the bulk of spending this year, with most of the money spent from June through August. The much smaller Arizona Leadership Fund contributed to a handful of candidate committees directly.
