For-profit body donation executive (R) wants to be an Arizona legislator

An Arizona body donation company executive wants a seat in the state Legislature but says he's not making the cadaver industry part of his platform.

Garland Shreves works as chief of staff for the Pinal County Attorney's Office and is also CEO of the for-profit Phoenix-based Research for Life body donation company, which uses the body parts of corpses to sell to medical device companies and others.

"If you go to my website Garlandaz.com you don't see anything about body donation on there. That would be a very small platform and limited to a small group of people," he said.

Companies such as Research for Life are subject to minimal regulation, and some have engaged in illegal and unethical practices that have drawn the attention of law enforcement. They've also earned the nickname in some circles as "body brokers," but those in the business don't like that term.
