vaccination if it came from Russia, or their distribution satellite's.. I am more than a little suspicious of this vaccine and how fast it supposedly is going to be here.. the only entity that I know that has a vaccine ready to go is Russia..

(23,156 posts)If that's the one that comes out first, I may wait for a different version. They are also the ones that had the major infection during trials, but started the trials back up quickly. Maybe nothing nefarious was involved, but it does raise questions and given the investors, I just hope and pray it's a different company - one with zero Russian or drumpf ties.

(7,947 posts)50-70% effectiveness.
That's about what the flu vaccine is, I guess, and I get that every year.
And I will get a Covid vaccine when I'm sure it's relatively safe (like at the current flu vaccine safety level). I remember that swine flu shot in the 70s which had some serious (though rare) side effects and needed two shots and had to be withdrawn before I got the second shot. So I had all the risk and none of the protection.
I don't trust one word out of Trump's mouth, and he's so completely corrupted the CDC that I don't believe them either.
The head of Moderna, btw, said they're proceeding well with the vaccine trials, but, "We already have a vaccine. It's called wearing a mask."
So I'm going to concentrate on that until more info comes out about the vaccine trials. I'm abs with you on nothing from Russia. Putin will probably taint it with Novichok poison.

(7,947 posts)This says it will still be effective (and far safer than Trump's "herd immunity" because it will slow the spread, and the disease might be milder even if you aren't immune.
I'm not clear on whether we'd know if it worked for us? I mean, if I knew that I was now immune, I'd figure I could do without the mask and go to a restaurant and all...
but if there's no way to know, I wouldn't feel confident. (Probably best-- should wear a mask anyway).

(4,568 posts)is the key phrase. Could be a lot greater than 50-60 or, a lot less. We won't know until phase 3 trials completed (and even then, maybe not for certain till a lot later).
Agreed about mask wearing - has additional benefits regards colds and flu susceptibility. Myself, I'm getting used to wearing one (after a while you forget it's there) and am glad it's illegal here to appear in a public indoor space w/o a mask. I think east Asians may have one up on us here.

(7,947 posts)Of course, I have 5 in my car and 3 in my purse, so it's unlikely to happen. But it's funny what shows up in dreams!

(4,568 posts)I have four in my car now - two N95s and a couple of the blue "surgical" masks I picked up at medical service locations that made you use their masks no matter what you brought with you (which bummed me a little as the N95s are better).

(34,087 posts)since 2011-12, and only 4 times since 2004-05. The average effectiveness is around 40%.
My threshold for getting the COVID 19 vaccine is a predicted 50% effectiveness (plus solid research supporting safety and effectiveness).
COVID 19 is different from influenze (1) more likly to produce long-term consequences (2) more deadly (3) more contagious and (4) less likely to vary enough from year to year so that it is subject to the predictive failures that are responsible for the poor effectiveness of the influenza vaccine.
I'd like it to be closer to the 90+% effectiveness of measles, polio, tetanus (to name a few). But because of (1) - (4) above I put it in the category with measles, polio, tetanus, etc., for which my efectiveness threshold for gettting the vaccine is far lower.

(44,974 posts)But covid is more deadly than the flu. I will get covid vaccine if vaccine is fully tested as it is supposed to be.
I don't see that happening any time soon.

(1,351 posts)1) Many in the pipeline for COVID that are already in use for other viruses (so safety is known)
2) Can be used post-exposure to prevent infection, like many HIV antivirals
3) Not as sensitive to virus mutations. Tamiflu released 20 years ago and still works against all mutations of influenza A and B strains.
4) Important for those whose immune systems may not evoke a big enough response to vaccine to protect them.
There is a cat vaccine for coronavirus that looks very promising against COVID in humans. Favipiravir is another hopeful candidate.

(15,265 posts)...a history of careful development and solid scientific testing, done under the auspices of a reasonably non-compromised FDA and CDC.
None of that is assured right now.
As a benefit/risk trade-off, I'd even be willing to take a COVID vaccine that's developed a bit faster than usual, and even with some corner-cutting, because COVID is panning out to have about a 5% mortality rate, and some nasty long-lasting effects for many survivors too, so that has to be balanced against hunting down every possible one-in-million negative reaction to a vaccine.
But a vaccine released as soon as November, under the Trump administration!? No way!
Early to mid 2021, under Biden, however, and I'll definitely consider it.
