There will be no senate hearings even on this before the election. There is simply no time. Average confirmation time is around 60 days at best! These senators also want to be campaigning in an election year not stuck in DC on Halloween! Also, do you seriously think Toad will nominate someone next week and McConnell get him approved the week after? Not. Gonna. Happen. Do you seriously think Ernst, Romney, Tillis and Collins will allow a power grab?? Smarten up!
Now, more importantly, RIP to RBG, one of the best SCOTUS appointees ever and a marvellous human being!

(25,454 posts)Precedent went out the window when Trump was elected. That should be blatantly obvious by now.
McConnell is on the record stating that he would push a nominee through in this very situation.

They'll seat someone before October is done.

(81,852 posts)They can vote to end them almost whenever they want. The senate works off of a combination of decency and power. Power is more powerful than decency.
This could be wrapped by the end of September if they want.

Trump announced a list last week. He knew this was probably coming. I pretty much guarantee they're set and ready to go, sadly.

(310 posts)This is what the gop has dreamed about for the last 50 years, a clear majority. Getting to 6-3 is more important to them than keeping the senate, or trump staying in power. This is the end all for them. They will make it happen, hell or high water.

This is serious, another justice before the election means the election goes to Trump ... WHEN ... it goes to the courts.
TwilightZone
(25,454 posts)I think you're giving the Rs too much credit. Outside of Romney, I think every one of them is a guaranteed up vote.
NewsCenter28
(1,835 posts)No way. They lose everything if they do this.
TwilightZone
(25,454 posts)Packing the courts was the long game. There is zero chance they will pass on that opportunity even if it means losing the Senate. At this point, they probably think it's already lost anyway so they have nothing to lose.

(25,454 posts)She was a no on Kavanaugh and I figured she might take a stand here, as well. I'm glad to see she has.
Collins is probably toast anyway and will likely follow the party line. If she couldn't even vote no on Frat Boy, she won't likely have a problem with a less problematic nominee.

Did these people not live through 2016? Do they not get that Republicans cheat and are going to try anything to appeal to their stupid base? Do they not understand that Trump is desperate? Hes fighting for his life. Hes either going to jail if he loses or Putin will have him killed to keep him from saying something he shouldnt if he loses.
I feel like just causing all out disruption in the Senate if they do anything. So sad and scared right now that maybe I should take a little break from DU.
