(53,061 posts)The election is to fill a temporary appointment and not the beginning of a new term
Kelly has to run again in 2 years.
AZ Republic has an article on the subject but it is behind a paywall.

(27,792 posts)I didn't realize that (I mean, I knew that it was a temporary appointment, but I didn't realize it ended on Election Day). That's good news.

(53,061 posts)AZ law, but I would assume that once AZ Sec of State certifies the election result McSally would no longer be the temporary Senator.
There is also an election in GA to fill a temp appointment.

(5,275 posts)There are republicans in a pickle as to what to do. We just need a few maybe just maybe we can save this pick for Joe.
If not, if Hypocrite Mitch rams one through all bets are off. We play nice they kneecap us. No more if that happens.

(34,040 posts)IF you trust them
from cnn:
Here is a list of four Republicans senators who have said they will oppose a vote before the election:
Maine Sen. Susan Collins told the New York Times, I think thats too close, I really do."
Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski in September said, "Fair is fair," and she would not vote to replace RBG before the election."
South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham in October 2018 said, "If an opening comes in the last year of President Trump's term, and the primary process has started, we'll wait to the next election. And I've got a pretty good chance of being the Judiciary [Chairman]. Hold the tape."
Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley said in July he would follow the Biden rule, "I'm just following what was established by the Biden Rule in 1986 and then emphasized by him in 1992... They set the pattern. I didn't set the pattern. But it was very legitimate that you can't have one rule for Democratic presidents and another rule for Republican presidents."

(6,008 posts)grassley's is from July. The other two are undated. I'm sure as hell not going to trust their musings about some hypothetical situation. I'd be interested to hear what they say now that the situations not hypothetical, but I likely still wouldn't trust them until their vote is in the record.

(9,095 posts)Romney has said that Roe v. Wade should be overturned since 2007, and I'm sure he'd want to maintain his anti-choice bona fides if he's thinking about winning another election.
On the other hand, he would be 76 years old leading up to the next presidential race, no spring chicken, even for a teetotaling Mormon.
He could actually take this opportunity to stick it to Trump, but despite his impeachment vote, he's not particularly known for his intestinal fortitude.
I think it's a 50/50 proposition, at best, whether he'll stand up to McConnell.

(3,369 posts)Phony Joni, Gardner, McSally, Daines. Probably not Lindseed since he'll say anything to get reelected, then flip if he wins. Gardner, Collins and maybe McSally seem the obvious choices as they are in states Biden will win.

I want you to use my words against me. If theres a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said lets let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination."

For whatever it's worth, there's some past background on how two other Senators have stated they would behave.
