A Republican friend (not a Trumper) offered an interesting observation

He suggested that it will be harder for some Republicans not to vote for Trump if he's blocked from getting a SCOTUS nomination through before the election. To put it another way: They care more about the SCOTUS seat than about having Trump be president, so if they got the seat now, they'd be happy to watch Trump lose in November, but if they don't get the seat now, they may feel like they have to support Trump to prevent Biden from getting to nominate RBG's successor.

Their support for him is religious in nature. They believe he was sent by God to implement God's will in this country and that opposition to Trump equals opposition to God. For them to abandon their devotion to Trump, they'd have to admit their religious beliefs were wrong, and they will never do that.

They want to drive the voters (that might have sour on Trump and the republican senators) to go out and vote for them. I see a few of the red state senate races that we are leading to lean back into republican direction. We will see the polling in a week or 2.

disgusted with Trump, no0t voting now or voting Biden won't be the ones that the SC will call them to vote Trump. They are voting against Trump for their own reasons and have already considered the SC

They won't hold the vote until after the election so that even if the Democrats win they can railroad through their justice in the lame duck session.

Use it as a political issue for votes and then do it anyways. Win or lose Biden will not get to name RBG successor. This is Moscow Mitch people. He would push his mother in front of a bus for a vote and let the bus back over her for another one.

I don't think so. If he doesn't "win," he's going scorched earth on everyone. Not just democrats.

And yes, Biden can and will get to add a successor because democrats will add seats to the SCOTUS.

Also while I am all for increasing the size of the SCOTUS if Mitch pulls this BS it would require retaking the Senate and then passing legislation in both houses without too many Democrats breaking ranks.

It should be an absolute priority but it isn't guaranteed.

As for Trump passing on it. He hates Biden. He will hate Biden even more if he loses no way Trump withholds a nominee so that Biden can make it.

a Senate vote when Scalia died 200+ days before the election but it's ok for trump to get one when RBG died just 46 days before the election?

I swear they are wired so selfishly devoid of moral character.

I always thought of RBG’s seat that was on the ballot this November. Everyone (or rather, lots of people) thought that RBG would retire or die by or during the next presidential term.

and Biden if he won would be replacing her. Breyer is also old and Biden would likely replace him as well. So they know this. Their issue is the danger Trump poses to democracy.
