Detroit to install new drop boxes for absentee ballots, voter registration forms, more
Michigan voters have been able to request an absentee ballot since Aug. 20, and millions have already done so following Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Bensons advice to sign up to vote absentee as early as possible.
More than 2.1 million Michiganders had requested an absentee ballot as of Sept. 10, returning their completed applications to vote absentee either in-person to their clerks office, by fax, by email or through the mail. Some voters have even used drop boxes to return their ballot applications but not in Detroit, at least not yet.
Detroit voters have not been able to use the two drop boxes the city installed ahead of the August primary to return applications for an absentee ballot for Novembers election, according to Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey.
Winfrey's office is in the process of installing additional ballot drop boxes across the city and decided to wait until the installations are complete to begin accepting election materials from voters. "What you dont want to do is open some and not others. All of our ballot boxes are locked and will remain that way until were able to open them all," she said.
