We have already failed.
Shed your tears and continue the struggle.

(7,012 posts)in my heart I know it didn't have to be like this either. Since we can't fight the last election, I'll leave it there.

Losing Ruth was a bad blow, but not unexpected. We will overcome.

(32,238 posts)If Republicans rush through the nomination they will lose it all. No need to be doom and gloom. There is nothing set in stone that says the Supreme Court has to be comprised of 9 justices. Democrats would have a very good argument to increase the size of the court after Merrick Garland and if McConnell pulls this stunt. Maybe 11 justices isn't enough, maybe 13?
I can't wait to vote.
ps/ check your registration status, these bastards are dirty.

(17,589 posts)As tremendous a personality as RBG was, she was still only one person. She was old and sick and it was her time. One person can have a huge impact but the world and our country always goes on. We've lost great leaders before (JFK, Martin Luther King, RFK) and we survive and continue their good fight.
I had to get off DU last night because I just couldn't understand all the "we are so f***ed" threads. If people give up that easily, yes, then we have no hope. But I've been around for seven plus decades and have seen so much change even after the great ones of my youth died.
We will always move forward. It's the way of the world.

(295,871 posts)I also got off DU, turned off the TV, listened to Toots and mourned for him and RGB.
I'm sick of the hopelessness - where are the brave?

(17,589 posts)It has always kept me sane and positive. Books and music have been my salvation during the tough times in my life.
What I said applies to the orange idiot as well. We will never mourn his passing, but if he did, the hateful followers would still be there as they always have been. The death of one person does not stop the world. We all need to remember how big our universe is and how, in the greater scheme of things, we're just a blip on the face of the earth.
There is so much beautiful music in this world and that tells me that there are more beautiful people too. An ugly, hate-filled person could never create beautiful music.

(34,890 posts)Whenever something big and unfortunate happens, there is inevitably a huge knee-jerk convulsion of hair-on-fire-gloom-and-doomery. It happens every time. Stepping away until people come to their senses is the best thing to do. Some people just need time to step back and gain some perspective about things.

(55,063 posts)It is a sign to work harder. Something is in doubt, we are being told to think hard and play the game in each of our political realities, then push with all our might. We know we were cheated in 2016, and we must be vigilant in 2020. Hop to it!

None of us are giving up. Our troubles will take longer to resolve without her, but we will do it.
Get out the vote. Get to the streets. Get to the airwaves, the newspaper pages and social media. We will do this.

(1,789 posts)"Calm down" and "relax" are not the same thing. It would behoove us to calm down, but not relax, continue the struggle as you say. The emotions we are feeling are proper, but should not be the only thing guiding our responses and actions while the election is at stake. At this juncture we do not even know exactly what we are responding to. Yes, we have been dealt a bad hand but let's see exactly what the cards are.
There is a range of possibilities, 1. the ram the new justice in before the election, 2. they wait until the lame duck session, 3. the most unlikely scenario, a handful of republicans hold it up until Biden is sworn in.
These are human systems, not divine. The struggle continues until we go the way of RBG.

(14,374 posts)Then we expand the courts. And no talk about that delegitimizing the court. The Republicans already did that with their Merrick Garland and Brent Kavenaugh stunts.

(24,719 posts)I so wanted her to make it until she could have her retirement. She didnt get to do that. The very least we can do is keep fighting. Thats how we honor her. We wipe our tears and we forge ahead. There is no other choice.
