The Supreme Court Boomerang

Beyond the fact that McConnell's actions and any public airing will energize the Democratic Party and supercharge fundraising (as it did during Kavanaugh hearings) there could be a fix, and an enormous boon to the republic, in expanding the court and doing away with the filibuster. What we need is to focus on TAKING BACK the SENATE! The death of our beloved RBG at this time could turn out to be a timely gift, Trump be damned.

sense of nobility.

Wins matter. Bold action matters. If this horrible event gets Democrats to retake the Senate and then ... ACTUALLY USE THAT POWER TO PUSH FOR REAL PROGRESSIVE CHANGE then something good will come out of it.

Play to win. Win the Senate. Remove the filibuster. Expand the Supreme Court. Open PR & DC to Statehood. Implement the Wyoming Rule. Pass real restrictions on the Office of the Presidency.

And its glorious ability to blow up in their faces. Yes, they will be more awful than we imagine. Vote them out and we can fix it. Enough. Everything depends on us.

...make D.C., Puerto Rico, and Guam states, and lift the 435-seat cap on House members, breaking the disproportionate power of small states in both the House and the Electoral College.

Not saying we’ll get each and every one of these but, damn it, we need to try.

and assign Representatives to all other states based on that as a unit of 1. So, if Wyoming has about 500K, and California has about 40 million, that is 80 times as many. California has 53 representatives now. It should have bout 80 by this plan.

If it’s legal, then that is what we should do!!!

That, plus DC and PR statehood should keep congress safe for a while.

The constitution sets no size for the House other than it must be at least 100 and every state must have at least 1 rep. Beyond that the size is simply set by statute.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyoming_Rule

Expanding the house reduces the power of the small states because they get 1 vote no matter what. Expanding the house also means there are more total electoral votes so the influence of the senate in the EV total is less.

Article I, Sec. 2:

"...The number of Representatives shall not exceed one for every thirty Thousand, but each State shall have at Least one Representative;

but as population grew, that got a bit unwieldy in practice, so Congress capped House membership at 435. That was ninety or so years ago, so I could argue that it's time for an update.

The last time the size of the House was increased was after the 1910 census. New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii weren't states. The population has tripled since then. Women didn't have the universal right to vote, nor did most African Americans and Native Americans. The size of the House needs to change.

...is the closest race with a chance of flipping. Maybe Ossoff in GA? Hickenlooper in CO, Bullock (MT), Cunningham (NC), Greenfield (IA). Kelly (AZ) and Gideon (ME) seem to have sizeable leads, so less is needed there. I'd love to take down McTurdle (KY), but McGrath doesn't seem to be getting the traction she needs. (Maybe this fight will energize her support?)

Consider also Schumer's Senate Majority PAC, or Indivisible's Payback Project to pool our resources for taking out the most vulnerable and obnoxious Senate GOPhers. 21st Century Dems is a good progressive PAC, but also supports House candidates.

It would have been a lot easier for RBG to just retire during Obama’s first term.
She would have been in her late 70’s then.
I guess she didn’t think as hard about her health and what her untimely death would do to our left wing cause.
I’m hoping for the best outcome in this very stressful filled situation.

RBG didn't have any idea what would happen to this country after Obama's first term. We can't change the past.
