In a campaign speech in Minnesota on Friday, President Donald Trump defended Confederate leaders including General Robert E. Lee while decrying protesters who attempted to damage Confederate monuments.
President Trump has resisted calls by protesters against racism in the U.S. to get rid of vestiges of the Confederacy. He has said that his administration would not allow military installations that bear the names of Confederate leaders to be rechristened. At a July press conference, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said the bases "are not known for the generals they are named after, the bases are known for the heroes that served at them." Trump also signed an executive order which would send protestors who deface historical monuments to jail for ten years.
"Robert E. Lee, whether you like him or not, he won many battles in a row," Trump said Friday. "He would have won except for Gettysburg."
Trump said U.S. protesters "have no idea what they're ripping down. They're ripping down in many cases greatness. They're ripping down our past. They're ripping down our history. That's where these guys begin. They take away your history."

(31,261 posts)He was superior to Lee considerably, as well of people like Stonewall Jackson.
General Meade defeated Lee at Gettysburg, a fight that is widely considered to have broken the confederate army. General Meade was replaced by President Abraham Lincoln for not pursuing and destroying the battered confederate armies. General Meades replacement was General Grant, who had led successful campaigns on the wars western front. General Meade continued to serve, fighting under General Grant and winning battles that led to the confederate surrender.
One of the most brilliant tactical decisions made in the war was the concept of Total War that General Grant devised with input from Generals Sherman and Sheridan. The concept was that you not only defeated an enemy on the battlefield, you made it impossible for that enemy to recover, raiding food supplies and destroying what was left, destroying means of communication and transport, burning buildings to the ground that could have served as rallying points for the enemy.

Same with Mussolini.
The fascists have waited all these years with saliva dripping off their fangs just waiting for this moment and 30% of Americans just want to give it away.
Gaud, I'm sick to my stomach about that plus many other cuts.

(7,430 posts)The Confederacy was doomed to fail. They were running out of money. They were running out of soldiers. They were running out of raw materials-- munitions, rifles, etc. They had no way to produce the materials of war-making. The Union had manufacturing centers going full bore. By the time of Lee's surrender, the South was a rag-tag mess. Sherman had run right through the South, cutting off supply lines, Grant had already cut off routes going across the Mississippi, and it was just a matter of time before the South would have to surrender, or just wage local skirmishes with no purpose. War is expensive, and the South didn't have the wealth.
Trump is an idiot. Anyone with a lick of sense knows that the South will not Rise Again, not with slavery, not without slavery. Trump is just getting his Proud Boys and his Bundy knuckleheads to salivate and crack open another beer. Gettysburg my ass.

(31,261 posts)General Philip Sheridan and General George Henry Thomas. When the war was about to break out, Sheridan left a post at a military college in New Orleans to return North. General Thomas was a Virginian and the right hand man to Lee at West Point, but chose to stay with the Union while Lee joined the confederacy. General Sheridans armies shredded the confederates in parts of Virginal and down into Tennessee, he also was one of Grants key tacticians and helped devise the battle strategy that forced the confederacy into surrender. General Thomas held Grants eastern flanks in Grants western campaigns, facing and defeating the toughest confederate units, he also held Shermans flank as Sherman cut the South in two.

(7,430 posts)Any remark he made about Lee and Gettysburg showed how foolish and ignorant he is. He hired people to take his tests and examinations for him. He paid his way through tests and didn't gain a thing from college. But to be fair, he's got a doctorate in Bullshit and Bluffing.

(64,957 posts)That battle happened because the "genius" Lee thought he could fight battles on Union soil despite the fact that there was ZERO way to stay there logistically.
Unbrilliant.
When he finally got convinced by Longstreet that they could not forage for ammunition, Lee decided the only options were to go home, or go for broke.
He sent most of his army into a meat grinder for a day & a half.
Lee was not a great tactician, he likely couldn't spell strategy, and he was a butcher. Sacrificing young men so HE could keep his slaves.
He was a hack. If McClellan hadn't been an idiot & a punk, the civil war wouldn't have lasted more than 3 months. Lee didn't beat the Army of the Potomac. McClellan did.

(422 posts)MN was eager to send troops to the Union because they had just been granted Statehood. It was the volunteer 1st division that known for repelling a large Confederate advance, holding the line despite suffering heavy casualties until reinforcements could arrive. Helped win the battle. We took their battle flag as a spoil of war.
