Males have a small black spot on the top surface of the hindwing. Females do not.
You can see the spot when the wings are open; sometimes it's faintly visible when the wings are closed, too.
Males also have slightly thinner wing veins.

(12,165 posts)...every photo entered was a potential winner, and it was as hard as it ever is to choose one. In the end, I imagine them, each one in turn, hanging on my wall, and I choose which one I would want that to be.

(14,757 posts)Even though all these photos are good, I always try to stay faithful to the specified theme. In this group, only four could be identified with summer with little doubt, remembering many flowers can be hothouse grown in winter.
