If the Republicans can't get the votes to out their own creature in place, Garland would be an excellent strategic choice as he would be older and more moderate than almost any alternative. It would be really hard for us to say no to Garland without some seriously bad optics.
I can see Mitch or another smart player coming up with this. The hardest sell would be to Trump himself.
