...is underscoring the (bullshit) "principle" they went on and on about to not consider Obama's pick, to insist they keep to the "rules" they themselves insisted were so important.

Only a few wild-eyed optimist think it might shame them into not pushing ahead. But you do have to lay the groundwork for making it clear to any fence-sitters that what they are doing is a naked power-play, and it justifies the power-plays needed to counteract it, both now and later.
