The Catholic Church in the USA has sold out on the abortion issue. Nothing else matters. When I went to Catholic school in the 1950's and '60's we were taught "liberal" values. Labor Unions were good. Everyone deserved health care. Your skin color does not matter. You care for the poor even through government welfare programs etc. Separation of church and state are in the best interest of the churches.
Maybe selling that there are six Catholic justices will get the Catholic Church back to the Matthew 25 church I grew up in.

(90,978 posts)Though not raised as a Catholic, I was aware of the Catholic Workers Movement, the Berrigan Brothers, Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez and the Kennedy brothers. All good people, all working for the betterment of humanity.
At the present, the RC church (as an institution; for individuals YMMV) has made common cause with American Evangelicals on abortion, and it is not doing them any good.
Sadly, there seem to be other forces at work when it comes to the SCOTUS, and one of them is Opus Dei. If what I have read is correct, its made pernicious inroads among the male Justices.
What Opus Dei has in common with Protestant Evangelicals is a conviction that what this country needs is a good dose of theocracy. They are entitled to their point of view, but when it comes to running the US and interpreting the laws of the US, theocracy is unConstitutional.
At this point in history, I dont trust anyone put forward by Republicans. They are too deep into the culture wars. If a candidate is put forward by Democrats, they will have been vetted for their record and their views regarding a pluralistic society run on Constitutional principles. Anything beyond that, including gender, is gravy.
