I bet they will have no objections in pushing it through during the lame duck session.. Susan cooking would love to stick to the moderates who would have thrown her out by then. Till then she needs them just in case!

(32,017 posts)Collins (ME) and Murkowski (AK) have said that the next President should choose RBGs replacement. We need 2 more Republican Senators to break ranks at this point, and then we can fulfill RBGs dying wish.

(8,291 posts)Her latest statement refused to clarify to questions in the press whether she would consider a nominee in the lame duck. They are trying to play stupid games, hoping it will help their re election but not giving a fuck about democracy at the same time.

(8,291 posts)At this point though, we probably cannot count on senators to break ranks. I think our best hope is pushing through a ton of impeachment proceeding in order to force the Senate to prioritize impeachment over scotus. It will be interesting to see how senators vote on impeachment now that they don't have to worry about being primaried.

(19,264 posts)First any quotes or statements prior to Ginsburg's death are meaningless. They are complete hypotheticals and as Lying Lindsey has shown nothing said in the past matter.
Murkowski specifically would NOT comment on railroading through a confirmation after the election. Not commenting is as good as saying "of course I will do it"
"I did not support taking up a nomination eight months before the 2016 election to fill the vacancy created by the passing of Justice Scalia. We are now even closer to the 2020 election -- less than two months out -- and I believe the same standard must apply."
Murkowski did not address whether she will oppose President Donald Trump's nominee in a lame-duck session if Joe Biden wins the presidency.
As for Collins sure she is saying it now because she need moderates if she has any chance of winning in Nov. Once the election is over I have zero doubt she will fall back in line and vote to confirm in the lame duck session.

(32,017 posts)By all means, expand the SCOTUS. Its overburdened and cant hear enough cases in its present configuration. Id be cool with 15, 17, 19, or 21 Supreme Court justices. Think about it. Even if the Republicans took back the Presidency for a term or two, having a much larger number of justices will make it much more difficult (for either party) to actually shift the balance of power on the Court. A larger number will provide for much greater judicial stability.

(4,425 posts)If Trump wins, they *might* wait until after the inauguration. If Biden wins, they will do it during the lame duck session. Either way, they will vote in Trumps nominee.
They are not going to grow a conscience between now and then, no matter how the election goes. Count on it.
