(33,999 posts)to help him step up. When he stumbles, he lands with his knee on the platform and crawls up.
Pretty much what has happened to me as I approach steps (or, more frequently escalators) largely from the apprehension of how challenging the approaching task is.
My disability is vertigo - but whatever the stair-related disability, there is an added mental stress as you approach the challenging task, which sometimes translates into unexpected stumbles. They have changed the screening questions recently, but when the quesiton was, "Have you fallen within the last 6 months?" my answer was an automatic "Yes." and then I counted back to my last undignified plant on the pavement, which was invariably less than 6 months ago. When I fall, I just automatically set a new 6-month counter, since they always ask. That has remained true, even though I no longer have active veritigo - it only takes a tip off balance to send me into a tumble, from which I cannot recover. I can't imagine it is any different with post-polio syndrome.
Now that they have gotten to 2 months, sometimes I can actually answer "No." My mother (88) always answers, "No" - and was surprised, recently, to find out how often I land on the ground. It's not fun - and, as applicable here, it's not fun to be (vicarioulsy) made fun of.

That said, he more than anyone knows what proper health care means to all Americans. He more than anyone should be doing his damnedest to give the same healthcare to the people that we, the taxpayers are paying for his. We pay for his gold plan and he takes away all our basic needs, that includes yours. He is doing all he can to take away women's basic healthcare, pap smears, mammograms and birth control. He wants pre-existing conditions not to be covered when he himself has a covered pre-existing condition covered.
He wants to push us all over the cliff. He wants us all to die. I don't care if anyone laughs at him because he doesn't give a damn about us.
I am so very sorry for your disability, MS Toad. My heart breaks for you. Mitch will, however laugh in your face as he takes yours and our healthcare away.

(33,999 posts)I had an active bout about a year ago - bad enough that I had to toss the cart of books I needed one floor up on the elevator then walk up to the floor to meet it (elevators are worse than stairs). But the initial bout was 11 months of torture - and terror - before we figured out how to send it away. The worst was when I was on a crowded escalator approaching the bottom and someone was shoving down from the top - so I had to concentrate both on stepping off the moving escalator onto solid ground without falling on my own - but I also had to signal to the idiot doing the shoving that he was literally endangering my life (since I would have been trampled by people who had no alternative but to step on me when their step reached the ground). Fortunately, it didn't come to that - but the folks surrounding me probaby had a fun tale for their kids about the crazy screaming lady on the escalator.
It's amazing how much people assume about physical abilities based on appearance. I used a cane during most of that time - less to prevent falls - and more to be a visible sign that I was not stable so that people would be careful not to jostle me.
And - all it took was a couple of days of the room spinning about a year ago to be right back in the thick of it. And there are gas stations I boycott because of the constant motion screens that don't stop even when I am required to interact with the screen, and don't get me started on 3D photos in FB timelines (both of which are major triggers). But I fall well, and the only serious injury I had from a fall had nothing to do with vertigo.
I know McConnell is a vile human being - and lacks even a drop of empathy his own situation should have created. He deserves to be called out loudly for his hypocrisy and cruelty. But we can do that without laughing at his disability (and by extension, balance/mobility disabilities across the board).
When he stops laughing at us then I will stop laughing at him. I will stop laughing when he gives one shit about 200K dead Americans. He aids and abets all theses deaths. He condones every lying word out of the presidents mouth even when el presidente mocked a disabled reporter.
Tell that to Mitch, not me.

(33,999 posts)As someone who suffers from a different disability that sometimes makes steps challenging, I can tell you first hand that having difficulty with steps is not limited to lifting one's leg to mount the first step. It also involves the step or two ahead as you mentally prepare for task that is most directly impacted by the disability. The mental panic/shoring up to prepare for the approaching steps often translates into stumbling ahead of those steps.
And, as I indicated, polio often involves a period of years of no symptoms (during which enlistment might be possible), followed by an increase of symptoms as post-polio syndrome takes hold decades after the initial infection.
This hits personally, from two perspectives - both a disabiliy that makes stairs challenging when active, and friends who had polio as chidren (with post-polo syndrome decades later).
I find the OP incredibly offensive, and still hope you will self-delete.

(63,221 posts)How do you defend the way he plans to deprive the millions of disabled people of their much needed healthcare? I would never mock another disabled person.
I mock him because he is the embodiment of evil and he seeks to harm other disabled people by taking away their insurance and the protection for pre-existing conditions that they need to survive. The man is the embodiment of Satan.
Ms. Toad
(33,999 posts)Using a characteristic to mock someone is not an effective, unless that characteristic is viewed by many as negative - and by using it a weapon, you adopt that negative view.
It has absolutely nothing to do with defending him, as I am sure you know. I am criticizing the tool you are using to mock him, in the same way I would criticize the use of gay as an insult, or misgendering someone as an insult.
Don't use characteristics that are historically scorned as an insult, unless you are aligning yourself with those who view them that way.
There are plenty of ways to attack his hipocrisy without using his disability to mock him.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)Sorry. He is not immune to criticism, even though he had a disability as a child. He had help and he would deny it to others. That is not okay.
"In 1944, at the age of two, McConnell's upper left leg was paralyzed by a polio attack. He received treatment at the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. The treatment potentially saved him from being disabled for the rest of his life. McConnell stated that his family "almost went broke" because of costs related to his illness."
He lived and thrived because of a Democratic program which saved his leg and his life. He now exists to deny healthcare to other people through no fault of their own. Simply because they do not have the money to pay for it outright. He is an evil, hateful man. I don't really give a fuck if he had a disability if he is willing to deny healthcare to others. He can go to hell for all I care.

(33,999 posts)It speaks directly to his connection to Moscow, the seat of the Russian government, and its interference with our elections. Russian interference with our elections, unlike having a disablity, is actually a bad thing.
Personally, I tend not to use nicknames - but as long as the nickname doesn't leverage the negative connotations associated with a historically condemned characteristic (non-whites, LGBT, physical appearance, disablities) I don't particularly care if others do. (e.g. MoscowMitch, Traiter tots, Drumpf are fine; Miss Lindsay and mAnn Couter are not.)

Ms. Toad
(33,999 posts)That doesn't justify mocking a person with a disability - since mocking him mocks all of us with mobility disabilities.
And yes, this one is personal. I have vertigo which can easily send me tumbling in the circumstances depicted. It is currently inactive, but it has been more than a decade since I could answer the perennial question at the doctor's office, "have you fallen in the last 6 months" with anything other than, "Yes."
So when you are mocking McConnell, you are also mocking me.

And yes, I have a disability that make stairs challenging at times - and yes it has been more than a decade since I could answer the standard screening question,"Have you fallen within the last 6 months" by saying, "No." The vast majority of those,"yes" answers were associated with falls on stairs or falls within a step or two of either stairs or escalators.
When you mock him, you are mocking me. And I don't appreciate it.

treestar
(82,383 posts)Really. This is about McConnell, and claiming he is disabled. To what degree? He is still out destroying our country. And he is rich, so any disability is minimized. He can afford whatever he needs and works hard to make sure people like you don't have help.

Ms. Toad
(33,999 posts)Jeering at someone who stumbles because of a disability in my presence tells me exactly what you do behind my back when my vertigo causes a identical fall.
Use a tool other than ridiculing the visible effects of a disability to condemn him. It is no different than attacking Graham by misgendering him, or implying he is gay.
treestar
(82,383 posts)and that his fall there is a result of a disability?
Ms. Toad
(33,999 posts)Post-polio syndrome is real - and generally progressive
We don't see his feet when he tumbles - but from the fall (in which he lands with one knee on the 10"-12" platform it's pretty clear it is stair-related (i.e. climbing the platform), which makes it relatively certain it is disability related.
I can tell you from personal experience - as someone who regularly stumbles on the stairs due to vertigo - the emotional impact of the disability that makes me tumble also increases the likelihood that I will misstep and tumble as I approach the stairs as I get more and more apprehensive.
treestar
(82,383 posts)He is not too disabled to be a Senator and to do all he can to force his agenda on us. I don't think your experience proves anything. His words certainly don't.
Ms. Toad
(33,999 posts)falling down is mocking the disabilty. Period. It's not funny, regardless of who it is.
