'We're not gonna be manipulated.' Cracks form in Trump's Cuban-American base

"From the passenger seat of a Mercedes-Benz idling in the heart of America’s Cuban exile community, George Marrero explained Saturday why he would not vote again for President Donald Trump.

“This country has been abused for the last four years,” the retired Coral Gables police officer said while waiting for the start of a Cubanos con Biden caravan in the majority-Cuban city of Hialeah. “[Democratic presidential nominee] Joe Biden is going to bring back — like he’s said — the soul of America. It’s been lost.”

Amid evidence that Trump has significantly expanded his support among Miami-Dade’s traditionally conservative Cuban exile community, a counter-movement is afoot to show that there are thousands of Cuban-Americans in Florida who believe the president does not have their best interests at heart....

“I used to be middle class. Now I’m down at the bottom,” she said. “I was born in Cuba under Castro, so I know what a dictator looks like. Donald Trump is on his way, and we have to stop him.“

If the Cuban-Americans flip blue, it bodes well for Florida to flip blue.

have been able to clearly recognize a dictator when they saw one.

There are too many people from former "communist" nations that are swallowing the lie that Democrats are socialists and communists and conflate the notion with dictatorial oppressive regimes when it is not the economic system that is the problem, it is the political system that is the problem.

I find this common among former eastern Europeans as well. They don't seem to understand that a dictatorship can happen under any economic system and that it is not the economic system that produces the authoritarian regime. It is the system of government.

8. First generation Cubans were upper-class Batista supporters with privileges in Cuba.

They left because they lost their privileges, money, and power when Batista was overthrown.

I was born in Cuba under Castro, so I know what a dictator looks like. Donald Trump is on his way, and we have to stop him.

Nací en Cuba bajo Castro, así que sé cómo es un dictador. Donald Trump está en camino y tenemos que detenerlo

That should be playing all over Miami.

12. "Believe me, there are MANY Cuban Americans voting for decency."

From the comments section:

I am too a Cuban American that wants decency and truth in the White House not a lying con man as president. He has been brilliant in creating fear with the Cuban Americans yet they forget and ignore he is ruling like a dictator and 4 more years of him will bring more chaos to this great country. Believe me, there are MANY Cuban Americans voting for decency. We are just not as loud as the trumpies that love to insult anyone not agreeing with them

Without a Batista, there would not have been a Fidel. Let that sink in. Imagine a 1950's Cuba where leadership was democratically elected, far less corrupt, spoke truthfully, and who fully supported democratic institutions, an independent judiciary, and individual rights. In other words, a classic enlightenment Liberal. There never would have been a "Marxist" revolution. Keep playing politics as a zero sum, winner take all, game and you'll eventually get enough irate people who will simply demand a new game. It's a really bad idea and it led to Fidel.

Well, the history record shows that Fidel Castro came to Washington in the Spring of 1960 desperately looking for assistance. Batista and crew had left Cuba decimented and the people were literally starving. Castro wanted at least food aid and perhaps economic aid to rebuild the Cuban economy. President Eisenhower let Castro sit in his hotel for 3 days without a meeting. Then Nixon was sent over for a brief meeting where he basically told Castro that the U.S. would not offer any assistance. Demoralized and desperate, Castro returned to Cuba to be greeted by the Communist Party and the Russians who immediately offered food assistance and much other assistance. The rest is history. Blame it on Eisenhower (coincidentally, a Republican).

Cubans seeing Trump for what he is, a self-serving moron. He will tell you what he thinks you want to hear and make promises to bring you in and then do whatever he wants regardless of his promise. He is a deranged attention seaking individual who is concerned with nothing but his re-election. Why else would he wait two and a half years to give Puerto Rico the hurricane money one and half months before the election? I can only hope the Puerto Ricans see this for what it is.
