Trump Hails Robert E. Lee In Minnesota, State That Lost Thousands To Confederate Troops

President Donald Trump hailed Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee during a campaign rally in Minnesota, a state that lost thousands of soldiers to Confederate troops in the Civil War.

Trump, apparently unaware of the state’s sacrifice in the Civil War, hailed Lee during a speech in Bemidji on Friday as a “great general” who “won many, many battles in a row.”

Some 2,500 Minnesota soldiers lost their lives to battles and disease as they fought against slavery and to protect the Union.

“Had [Lee] won, we would be two countries,” state Sen. Jerry Newton, a veteran who served in the Vietnam War and in the Middle East, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune on Saturday. “That’s just unconscionable for me, for him to make those statements.”

At the outbreak of war in 1861, Minnesota, with a population of about 180,000, was the newest state in the union and the first to volunteer troops in its defense. The 24,000 Minnesota soldiers (including 100 free black men, scores of American Indians, and at least one woman) often found themselves on the frontlines or the last to leave the field in many battles and campaigns of the war... http://sites.mnhs.org/civil-war/minnesota-and-civil-war-first-last

Although the MAGAts who support him probably don't care because they don't know history and just stagger through life being stupid and mean.

Of course the GOOD PEOPLE of Minnesota were not present.

The only reason for any northerners to relate to the Confederacy is good old fashioned racism.

The entire argument for "heritage" is weak in the best of times. But it at least makes some marginal sense for someone raised in the South. For anyone outside the south, you are just putting on the bedsheets.

a pickup truck flying a US flag off one side of the box and the Confederate flag off the other. Obviously the owner of the truck didn't get the oxymoron (with the emphasis on moron) but was just using the Confederate flag to advertise his racist assholery.

that one of the key reasons Lee lost at Gettysburg was the action of a regiment from Minnesota.

Some historians say the entire battle and perhaps even the war was decided when the 1st Minnesota stopped Longstreet.
