Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance announced Monday that his office has grounds to investigate President Donald Trump for tax fraud.
The New York Times reported that Vances office gave details about the investigation that it has been working on for the past two years. Its the first time he revealed the specifics about any possible charges publicly.
Vance is the DA who subpoenaed Trumps taxes last year, only to be blocked at every turn by Trumps lawyers. But the Supreme Court, including one of Trumps own appointees, ruled against his efforts to quash the subpoena. Vance requested eight years of Trumps tax returns.
Trumps lawyers alleged that it was all a political hitjob from Vance, but in the new filing, Vance explained that at no point had he directly accused the president, his businesses or Trump associates of any wrongdoing.
However, prosecutors listed news reports and public testimony that alleged misconduct by Mr. Trump and his businesses, said the Times. The reports, prosecutors wrote, would justify a grand jury inquiry into a range of possible crimes, including tax and insurance fraud and falsification of business records. It was the first time the office had included tax fraud among the possible areas of investigation.

(50,355 posts)Fun fact- Many moons ago, I used to work for Vances father, Secretary of State Cyrus Vance in the Jimmy Carter Administration. A man of great intellect and integrity, even if somewhat aloof and a member of a patrician, blue blood family. Recall how his young son (now Manhattan DA), used to accompany his father into the Office on Saturdays. I also vividly recall the day Vance resigned on principle as a result of the failed US military mission to rescue US hostages held by Iranian extremists at our Embassy in Tehran. He had vehemently opposed the raid and resigned immediately thereafter.

(11,563 posts)You have NO idea how anxiety-inducing and soul-crushing the sound of those big, barred steel doors sliding or swinging closed behind you as you go through them. I was there to check some electronic systems, had staff escorting me, and knew I was going home at the end of the day. Even so, it was stressful, and I bet my BP went up 10 points, at least.
I hope Drumpf pukes on his shoes when he hears it. For real..
