Do any DUers want to join up to rent an election-related billboard for a couple of months?
No idea where, but we could make this a collective to come up with a billboard to have some impact anywhere in the country where it is most needed:
*location and billboard owner contact info
*anti-Trump/anti-Reputincan messaging
*design
I hope this is not against DU's terms of service, but this could be sorta' like a "Go Billboard Me" kinda' thing!
I am half serious, and half not. If there is interest and it's ok to do it, let's do it. At this stage, this wouldn't be an "official" DU thing, but we could ask the Admins if it could be.
I would definitely be willing to kick in some cash for this.

(7,715 posts)I am talking about doing when together anywhere in the US where it can a difference.
It's just a thought. A swing state and a nicely traveled stretch of interstate is what I had in mind.

(46,700 posts)I would say do it on the I-4 Corridor, but that might increase the level of accidents. That's a ticklish area.

They could use some billboarding.

(55,007 posts)I even have a billboard lease (they pay me) from clear channel or whoever they are now. I offered to my county Dems to put one up if they figure out the legals on it (may be some kind of scenic designation - there used to be a lot more around here but they got removed)
offer stands for national party as well, but hard to find who to contact.

(55,007 posts)it is actually hard to find people to talk to about this, tried off and on for years.
Seems repugs don't miss chances to show off their imagined whatever, but we miss chances continually.

(55,007 posts)"Vote Democratic" type of sign I could leave up all the time, but I am not very creative and nobody seems to sell what I am looking for - and again, not sure what the laws are for that sort of thing anymore. I know the lease is a grandfathered thing that has been in the family for 3 generations LOL

(7,715 posts)to see if this could be a DU official thing.
EarlG comes up with some GREAT memes, and something he designs could be our message and design work done if this did become an official DU sponsored-initiative.

(10,167 posts)There's a really vile anti-democratic billboard up right now that says: "Make America a Marxist $h*thole. Vote Democrat! It shows a phony Mt. Rushmore left to right Biden, Harris, Stalin, Lennon, and Mao.
There are two of them right in a row, South to North, which is dumb, just out of Oshkosh.

May I suggest Iowa, I-80 near Des Moines?

(7,715 posts)I've sent a note to the Admins. Let's hear from them and, after that, decide what we're going to do.
I've done a bit of election law work over my years, but we need to be a bit careful (I think) as to how the money is contributed for the billboard.
Give me a day or two and I'll circle back. I am fed up with seeing RWNJ billboards and there is no reason that some likeminded folks like us can't do the same.
Please be giving some thought as to what we want to say! As I said, EarlG's memes are great, as they get right to the point, as do TLP and MeidasTouch.
I fervently believe MOST folks are basically good folks. I've hung out with corporate titans and I've hung out with truck drivers and handymen. I actually prefer the latter because they are much more transparent about their concerns as needs. Not to diminish anyone, but I am a huge fan of Sly Stone's views about song writing: "I write so that even dummies understand." I guess James Carville said the same thing with "KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid". If we can come with a single thought that can get us the maximum returns anywhere in the US of A, I am totally for doing this.
Stay tuned to this post for developments. I suggest we either get this done this week or, at the latest, early next week or shelve it until the 2022 mid-terms where we can plan it a bit better. However, I am totally in favor of doing this time if we can, keeping any on the calendar.
Kali: since you have the billboard, it may make sense to do via you, but let's see. Getting AZ would be something we haven't done in 24 years, and it's long overdue. That being said, the I-4 corridor in FL is also a candidate, as is Iowa and Wisconsin.
Will come back soon.

(7,939 posts)If we have to shelve it till 2022, maybe we could find a deal on yard signs and make sure DU members can get one at a reasonable cost, when you buy in bulk the price goes down?

(55,007 posts)I'm game for doing something, so will kick this thread back up.
OK DUers lets get some ideas going.
I will check with local signmakers to see what something installed that my cows wont eat would run. I envision a two sided sign that could be seen from both directions, but that may require a V-shaped structure (looking from above) I am not sure. I am sure I can place a temporary political sign no matter what, not sure legals of permanent signs and sometimes it is just better to not ask anyway!

(7,715 posts)DUers:
Here's an update on the billboard.
Thank you so much for the interest in this. But I think I spoke a bit too quickly and a bit too late.
After doing a bit of research on this, it's not as easy to get this done in the time we have, so I think we may need to shelve the billboard idea for a later election/issue. Kali's billboard in AZ would have been ideal (on a major interstate in a swing state, so it gets significant visibility), but it's spoken for. And getting one outside of our own personal connections won't be easy. If someone does have an "in" into a billboard company or a billboard owner, we can revisit the idea. But I think time is not in our favor now.
2020 would have been ideal for this, as we are all so united and determined. I genuinely think that we could have made this work if I had thought of it earlier in the summer and posted it here. But like a lot of good ideas, there's a timing aspect to it, and I was a bit late in coming up with it.
Also, for the next time, let's see if DU might consider making this an official DU project. I think it would be loads of fun for all us to come together, jointly select locations via DU polls, consider various designs via polls, and then implement. It may be 2024 before we get another chance where all of us have an interest in this regardless of where's it located, but let's see. I hope we DON'T need to do this in 2022 for Senate seats, as our Blue Tsunami in 2020 will mean it's not necessary!
Sorry about this. But we're still going to win!
