(82,849 posts)Scare tactics are right up front, of course, and target the low information folks first. Threats of arrest and a felony conviction if you vote wrong. This is pretty effective, because there's almost always a recent example like Crystal Mason in Texas, who voted while she was on probation and is sitting in prison even now.
Then there are the "official" pronouncements that due to unexpectedly large crowds at the polls, the elections commission has decided that Republicans should vote on Tuesday and Democrats should vote on Wednesday. Anyone caught voting on the wrong day will be arrested and charged with voter fraud.
Billboards in "certain" neighborhoods, targeted robocalls, and other scare tactics will be deployed to frighten voters from voting in heavily Democratic precincts. These will be augmented by increased police patrols in neighborhoods the cops don't usually cruise. Poll "observers" who will challenge voters who fit a certain profile, which was how Chief Justice Rehnquist made his bones in Arizona, intimidating voters.
But these are the just the standard tricks. There will doubtless be new wrinkles this time around for Republicans to suppress hostile votes.
