NFL Hall of Fame Gayle Sayer passed away.

Story just breaking.

I was never a Bear fan, but I loved to watch him play the game. An awesome player and all around great man. He went to Omaha Central High school and than played college ball at Kansas. A former teacher of mine at Omaha Burke knew Sayers well and he would tell stories about Sayers as a player and as a young man.

as a very young child.

Possibly the best player to ever take the field there.

Growing up in Chicago in the 60s...some local stereo store was doing a grand opening and their draw was Gayle Sayre and Brian Piccolo. I ended up with a Rolodex card with both their autographs on it.

By the time Piccolo passed away it was lost it a 10 year old’s junk drawer. WTF did I know...right?

So it, along with things like my early Marvel comic book, is probably wrapped in plastic somewhere in a rich guy’s collection.

(Channel 7 in Chicago played "Brian's Song" A LOT in the after school slot when I was in Jr. High and High School. That movie makes me cry every. damn. time.)
