We need to figure out how to retake the Blue Wall plus Arizona for insurance.

which indicates the on the night totals will look Republican, unless postal votes are tallied first or at the same time.

Looking ahead, 47 percent plan to vote in person on Election Day, while 34 percent plan to vote by mail/absentee ballot, and 15 percent plan to vote at an early voting location.

Among voters who say they plan to vote in person on Election Day, 57 percent support Trump while 35 percent support Biden. However, among voters who plan to vote by mail/absentee ballot, 68 percent back Biden while 26 percent support Trump. Among those who plan on voting at an early voting location, 65 percent support Biden, while 34 percent support Trump.

They just sometimes take longer. By 10 pm we'll know who won.

People are thinking it will come down to a 2000 FL like scenario, but the fact is that in most states absentee ballots will be getting counted and added to totals incrementally all day and night just like in person ballots.

The idea Trump will be ahead at 10pm and declare himself the winner when absentee ballots are still coming in is just not very realistic.

And how many people wait until late to mail the ballot (which isn't necessarily just about president - they may want to think about something down-ticket, maybe not even partisan).

It does look like, for most of the vital states, they can start counting them during the day, or even before in some cases: https://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/vopp-table-16-when-absentee-mail-ballot-processing-and-counting-can-begin.aspx , and those don't accept ballots received after the day, but postmarked before - https://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/vopp-table-11-receipt-and-postmark-deadlines-for-absentee-ballots.aspx .
