Ohio absentee ballot applications more than double from 2016
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) -- This election year, Ohio will be tested in the arena of absentee ballots. Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose reports that the county boards of elections have received more than double the amount of absentee ballot applications compared to this time during the 2016 election.
1,784,004 absentee ballots have been requested so far this year, compared to 805,844 absentee ballots requested during this time in 2016.
The more than doubling of absentee ballots is due to COVID-19 as many people choose to stay home rather than go to the polls to fight the spread of Coronavirus.
LaRose expresses confidence in Ohio's ability to process the doubling of ballots, citing a comprehensive review by the Brookings Institute where Ohio beats out the other 41 states in the area of traditional absentee voting.
