We had a discussion today on Joan Collins.

He was a gay character and wound up being a heterosexual husband. It just aggravated me that they compromised his character so badly.

Given the attitudes now, we sometimes forget the baby steps it took to get here. Looking back, it was the equivalent of a back handed compliment, but it showed the women in Steven's life accepting him and trying to help, in whatever limited way they could. That is one reason why I think women should be running the world. They GET it.

A lot of gay men have gotten married and been unhappy. It didn't make them heterosexual.

I watched it religiously BECAUSE of Steven's character, Alexis (whom I loved to hate), Krystle (who was such a limp dishrag), the beautiful clothes, homes, and all the trappings of the rich. I was living vicariously, since I was dirt poor (I could probably still be considered relatively poor, but I am comfortable). But I couldn't stomach DALLAS. I already hated Texas, and everything they embodied.

Dynasty was required viewing.

The Alexis hijinks were must-see TV. I agree about Krystle. She was boring.

I didn't care about Dallas, but my parents were completely hooked. LOL

I think I watched one or two episodes of Dallas when it first came on, but that was it for me with Prime Time Soaps. They were all just boring.

Dramatizing phony wealthy people and their problems is not for me. There's too much of that going on as it is.

For the most part,, American prime time TV sucks, IMO. Then and now.

36. People like to diss on Joan, but she was in the BEST EVER original Star Trek episode.

"The City On The Edge Of Forever".

She was perfect for the role, and you were literally left in tears at the end. Incredibly moving.

edit to add... regarding Star Trek and female actors

I really couldn't stand "Lucy" (the character). Although Lucille Ball was incredibly beautiful, and a good actor, television turned her into a one trick pony with a penchant for screaming.

BUT, without "I LOVE LUCY" we wouldn't have Star Trek. She (and Desi) created Desilu Studios, which gave the original Star Trek series the green light to get produced. I will thank her forever for that.

I was about 2nd grade when it came on, and about 9th grade when it went off. I don't remember anyone around me really watching it. Kind of like something we all knew about but didn't watch. I do remember watching Dallas and Falcon Crest. Angela Channing and JR Ewing would have made a frightful couple. My stepmother liked Knotts Landing.

It was all the rage when I was in college. There were actual watch parties for it. The boys would say lewd things about Heather Locklear and Linda Evans and cheer on the catfights. God...the things I used to hear and put up with back then. Fuck Dynasty.
