Are there consequences for loss of life?

I've been asking myself this since the charges were announced for the officers associated with the murder of Breonna Taylor.

We, as a society, have all agreed that we should not murder each other. We all have a mutual understanding that you won't kill me and I won't kill you. We have agreed that loss of life should be punishable. We, as a society, have all agreed to give the state the power enforce our agreement and to punish people that violate our rules or default on our agreement.

Here, we have a young lady that lost her life at no fault of her own. She was innocent in whatever business that police had going on. What exactly is our remedy here? Someone violated the rules that we have all agreed to, and therefore, there should be a consequence.

People kill other innocent people all the time in automobiles due to their carelessness, e.g. talking on a cellphone, eating takeout.... Usually, it doesn't result in a vehicular homicide conviction.
