Michael Caputo receives 'metastatic head and neck cancer' diagnosis

Michael R. Caputo, the East Aurora political consultant at the center of controversy over the Trump administration's Covid-19 messaging, has been diagnosed with cancer.

Assemblyman David J. DiPietro, R-East Aurora, acting as Caputo's spokesman, said Thursday that the Health and Human Services spokesman on leave from his assistant secretary post has "squamous cell carcinoma, a metastatic head and neck cancer which originated in his throat."

"He is now home in Western New York, resting in the loving arms of his family, under the watchful eye of Jesus Christ," DiPietro said in a written statement.

Caputo, who was diagnosed after surgery last week for a lump on his neck at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md., has yet to determine where further treatment will take place, he said Thursday.

A veteran of Carl P. Paladino's 2010 run for governor as well as President Trump's 2016 campaign, Caputo ignited a firestorm in recent days after accusing government scientists of "sedition." He told The Buffalo News last week that he has endured significant pain in recent months after discovering a "walnut sized" bump on his neck that he labeled a "swollen lymph node."

"It's something I've been dealing with for months but didn't do anything about it," he said then, "even though I work in a building full of doctors."

It was a simile that underscores the consistency of belief. I don't believe in celebrating suffering and death, no matter the cause, no matter the culpability, no matter the deplorable nature of the target. That is most certainly not the same as defending their actions. It is allowing their own karma to decide.

Caputo, 58, said he entered the National Cancer Institute at the urging of Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who noticed the lump, and that the president directed arrangements for his admission and had checked on him.

"The Caputo family wants to thank President Donald Trump and Secretary Alex Azar for their friendship and support," DiPietro said Thursday, referring to the HHS secretary.

Caputo is on a 60-day leave from the federal government after posting a Facebook Live claim that some doctors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the agency battling the Covid-19 pandemic, were involved in an anti-Trump conspiracy.

Speaking of the devil...

https://www.syracuse.com/coronavirus/2020/09/report-carl-paladino-has-covid-19-still-opposes-ny-coronavirus-restrictions.html

Updated 8:22 AM; Today 8:22 AM

Buffalo, N.Y. -- Western New York businessman Carl Paladino is recovering from Covid-19 after being hospitalized this month, according to a new report.

Paladino, the 74-year-old Buffalo developer who ran for New York state governor in 2010, tells The Buffalo News that he was in the hospital for two days in early September. Tests found he had the coronavirus and a mild case of pneumonia.

“It was horrible,” Paladino told the newspaper. “It’s a terrible disease, and you don’t know when it’s going to end.”

Paladino was among the attendees at a “Gridlock Buffalo” rally in April opposing Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s coronavirus shutdown. He was forced to close five hotels and lay off 451 workers.

The Buffalo News reports Paladino is currently in quarantine, but hopes to resume working as chairman of Ellicott Development Co. as soon as he can. Paladino did not know how he got the virus and said he probably transmitted it to his sister and brother-in-law.

He also told the publication that he still opposes Cuomo’s restrictions to slow the spread of coronavirus.

“I think it was an overreaction,” Paladino said. “They’ve got America scared to death and our entire economy is shut down. Look at our city – look at these poor barbers, these bowling alleys, it’s just sinful what they did to our society.”

Paladino co-chaired President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign in New York and was the Republican nominee for governor in 2010. He was ousted from the Buffalo School Board in 2017, months after he said he wished President Barack Obama would die of mad cow disease and former first lady Michelle Obama should be “let loose on the outback of Zimbabwe.”

The coronavirus has killed more than 201,000 people in the U.S. and infected nearly 7 million Americans as of Thursday, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Yeah, he's a real charmer. Karma's a bitch, right Carl?

It was horrible.

They pulled all his teeth out, because they would have dissolved anyway due to treatment, and it was a better course of care to control the removal all at once. His dentures never fit right, so he had to learn to eat without any teeth, and very little saliva.

He had a course of radiation therapy. During the meetings for this, it was mentioned that maybe he should now stop smoking, seeing as how he had throat cancer, and the nurse said, "Why bother?" My brother turned pale when he heard that.

He was supposed to have his lymph nodes stripped out, but it would have severely impaired his arm movements, so he declined. He wanted to die. He never stopped smoking. He lasted approximately five years after diagnosis and treatment.

His death was horrendous. He had thick, ropey secretions that came out like vomit that he couldn't clear. Eventually, he died of suffocation.

My friends, if you smoke, do everything you can to stop. Throat cancer is a horrible way to die. I still cry when I think of what he went through.
