By debating a dictator you are legitimizing his candidacy and giving him free propaganda...The entire debate is a debacle.

(31,820 posts)Trump WILL show up for next week's debate - but the other ones aren't happening. After this, Pence/Harris and done.

(10,252 posts)No doubt Biden is still fuming about Trump calling our military losers and suckers. Still fuming about 200K + people dead from Covid. I'm looking forward to Biden tarring Trump with supreme moral failures.

(32,017 posts)What is there to debate, anyway? The Republican Party doesnt even have a platform, so the issues arent even on the table. The choice, here, is clear, and it simply demeans Joe to appear on stage with an Orange ignoramus.

And thats going to surprise some folks. They might just remember that they miss decency.

(5,931 posts)Many of the viewers already get it. Many more never will. I want the rest to hear Joe take this guy apart. I still remember the way he did that to Paul Ryan in 2012.

(41,960 posts)People need to hear him. He needs to give policy replies and show his health and sharpness. He needs to stop 45 and ilk telling us who he is.

(9,073 posts)One of their main lines of attack is Bidens cognitive abilities. I dont know if people here read conservative sites or blogs, but their biggest story is Bidens campaign putting a lid on the campaign early in the day.
Putting a lid means the candidate is no longer available for activities or comments. Republicans have seized on this as proof of Bidens cognitive decline, that hes being hidden on purpose.
If he doesnt debate, they will run with that even harder. Theyve been on it for weeks. Heres one article from yesterday.

(25,855 posts)It's long bothered me that the last few weeks of a Presidential campaign the candidates are flying all around the country, rarely getting even half a night's sleep. Being sleep deprived is very, very bad. Which is apparently one of Trump's problems, that he doesn't sleep much. That's probably why he is always so confused about everything.

(33,331 posts)As anyone who participated in HS Debate will tell you, these aren't debates. They're "debates".
An actual debate would leave Trump exposed as a fucking clown with no grasp of facts whatsoever. Which isn't news to anyone on DU, but it would be to the low-information bothsidist flibberdigibbets of America.

If debating the walking sludge-heap that is Donald Trump is a part of that effort, so be it.
Trump will try to set the building on fire (figuratively. Literally? Possibly. Who knows?), but Joe Biden will attempt to bring American politics back to the realm of the adult, the measured, and the civil.

The pig definitely won't enjoy that.

(32,626 posts)Trump is the Republican candidate. They debate. Why would they not? Trump is not yet a dictator, he's the President. His candidacy is legitimate, just ask the GOP. The entire debate has not yet happened, so not a debacle either.

(8,922 posts)A lot of people don't ever turn their TVs off of Fox News. Because of that, they have a false impression of the state of the country and what Trump has done as President. Many of them would be surprised to learn he has essentially done nothing in 4 years except sign a tax break for the rich and try to kill health care. Fox News spends a lot of time making up Trump accomplishments and hiding bad things. This debate is a rare opportunity that Fox News viewers will be seeing and hearing the same thing we are at the same time, and it could be eye opening for some. In that sense, it could be more of an opportunity for us to pick up some incremental support better than for them to. I'm not saying we will convert magats, they are too dug in to their cult to admit they are wrong. But there are some people who watch nothing but Fox News that are just ignorant and stupid about what's going on in the country because they think the propaganda they are getting is real news. They may be very surprised to hear for the first time that their social security is under attack.

(9,478 posts)Then Bravo.
Not 100% sure its intended or not, but I think lowered expectations for Biden works in his favor. Plus, if Trump believes the spin, he may let his guard down.

(17,425 posts)1) Having Presidential debates follows traditional protocol.
2) If he did not debate Trump, the insane squatter would flood every advertising space with "Biden is a coward. He's afraid to debate me". This would create yet another distraction from the real issues that need to be addressed.
3) It's another chance for VP Biden to present his platform.
4) It's the perfect opportunity to show the stark contrast between insanity and calm, rational, fact-based leadership.
5) It's quite possible that he can make Trump lose his shit on live TV.
