This is sad to see for anyone.
I'm no fan of Ron Paul, I confess I wish this was happening to Trump instead but beyond that I just am sad to see this happen to anyone yet it's in the news and so I'm posting it.

(28,895 posts)you can watch the left side of his face fall in the video. This would be excellent educational footage, especially if more speech from before the stroke were included. It's quite dramatic.

(34,189 posts)So he must have gotten treatment quickly enough to not have serious damage, though he may still need physical therapy. That video was included in a different thread here on DU - https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=14135731

(28,895 posts)Probably developed under some socialist medical research grant too. Ron should have sucked it up and endured his fate rather than give in to socialism.

(12,452 posts)This was difficult to watch. We just lost a friend a few days ago to a stroke than had no signs, she started speaking in a weird way and her head went back and she was gone. Wow....prayers for this man.

I can respect that, especially compared today's republican party of corrupt lying shitstains.

I'm not a fan, but I am not incapable of hoping he recovers.

(34,857 posts)I feel bad for his family. It's hard dealing with a stroke victim. My grandfather had a massive stroke that left him paralyzed. He survived but it diminished his quality of life and ultimately led to his death seven or so years later.
I do not have much sympathy for Ron Paul and won't miss his bigoted bullshit. I don't wish death on him at all, and I pray he recovers, but I do hope this forces his retirement and we never have to see or hear from him again.
hlthe2b
(105,731 posts)Your hatred toward him is self-defeating. He's gone from any influence in Congress and has been for nearly eight years.
I'd suggest you focus on those currently doing damage and let this old man ponder his own misdeeds and failures.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)Are you saying the man in the video was not Ron Paul? Who was it? And if it is Ron Paul still speaking about the free market, he clearly is out there pushing his bullshit and therefore, even if retired from congress, still hasn't retired from spreading his bullshit hate.
hlthe2b
(105,731 posts)So, yeah, that is ill-informed. And yes one who is retired can still give a speech now and then should they be invited to do so--whether at the local community forum or a recorded event.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)I didn't realize that wasn't Ron Paul in the video.

(34,857 posts)I never claimed I wanted him to retire from congress. You're the one who decided that was what I was talking about. Clearly he has not retired from public life as evident by the fact he was giving a political speech when he started babbling (more than normal). I only said I hope this retires him for good so I don't have to hear or see anything more about him. I never said I hoped he would retire from congress. You're just being purposely disingenuous there.
But yes, it's me that's ill-informed lmao
Have a nice day.

Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)You're the one who inferred that. Plenty of former congressmen and senators are not retired from public life and still parade their bullshit around. One is Newt Gingrich. He's been out of congress for as long as I've been alive it feels like and yet he's hardly retired.
You knew exactly what I was talking about. You just wanted to reply with a mean-spirited post about how ill-informed I was because you don't like the fact I'm not upset or praying that someone as awful as Ron Paul recovers fully so that he can continue some of his awful attacks.
Well enjoy that. I don't care. I wasn't ill-informed and I still hope this retires Paul so I don't have to ever hear another thing about him.
Have a good day.

(17,610 posts)Regardless of how I feel about his atrocious politics and his personal beliefs, that is just awful. Truly sad watching that happen in real time. Some may be wondering why he continued talking but in gibberish, it's because whatever neurologic event he just sustained affected the Broca's area of the brain which creates a type of aphasia where the individual is cognitively aware of what they want to say and can understand speech but they can't vocalize it, which I can only imagine is a nightmare.

::sigh:: This was hard for me to watch and brought about a bit of a flashback. My mother had horribly debilitating strokes when I was very young that left her barely able to walk, unable to talk or write well at all (the last one killed her). Since then, as a nurse and an in-law caregiver, I've taken care of stroke patients and my heart aches for some of the worst ones.
