to pander to low intelligence Fox news listening sheep people deciding the direction of the country. With the EC and gerrymandering we lose the advantage of the majority every time. More voted for Hillary by millions. There's more Democratic voters than republican constantly in state elections yet we lose. There is no way trump wouldn't be run out on a rail save for the Electoral college. People need their votes to count and now they really don't.

(43,049 posts)property owners, still worried that they wouldn't be bright enough to properly elect senators, either.
Senators are now directly elected, black people can vote, women can vote, poor people can vote, but we still can''t directly vote for President. But abolishing the EC requires a constitutional amendment, and both sides don't trust the consequences enough to try.
It would probably be a lot easier to work at the state level and try to get all states to get electors to be appointed proportionally with the votes. It's the "winner take all" that causes most of the problems.

(12,325 posts)get 2/3rds of the Congress to pass an amendment, then get 3/4ths of the states to ratify it.
Another thing to ponder, if a Constitutional Convention is convened, that opens up everything to potential change, which the R's would love to do.
Be careful what you wish for.
Just for the record, I agree with everything you said in your post.

it's more than likely not possible at this juncture in time, but it will come as the younger generation takes the reins of government.

(4,574 posts)let's get rid of the irrational apportionment of two senators for pieces of real estate. There is no good reason Rhode Island should have equal power in the Senate with California.

After losing the popular vote, President-elect Donald Trump has decided that the Electoral College is a pretty smart way to elect a president after all.
