(Reuters) - Thousands of supporters of the right-wing Proud Boys group were expected in Portland, Oregon on Saturday as police prepared for clashes in a city that has become the epicenter of sometimes deadly political violence in the run up to the Nov. 3 election.


Governor Kate Brown on Friday declared a weekend state of emergency for Oregon's biggest city, saying "white supremacist groups" were traveling from out of state to attend an event the Proud Boys say was organized to "end domestic terrorism."

Local and state leaders said in a letter to the community that many participants have openly discussed tactical operations and military-style formations and planned to cause chaos and violence while claiming to be acting in support of police.

"The event poses a physical danger to Portland residents, as clearly shown by the organizers' long track record of assaults, confrontations, and threats against elected officials and the citizenry of Portland," the letter said.

This is what frightens me how many people like the Proud Boys who will takes to the streets. What really Terrifies me are those white Supremacists in law enforcement and Military will turn on there own and American Citizens because Trump needs them too. How many still remain "unknown" that are waiting for the "right time" to act.

3. It is interesting to me...

It is interesting to me that the DHS does not treat internal, domestic terrorist groups with very much concern so far, or to the degree that the "terrorists" overseas were. Yet, we are facing a potentially greater threat and it is right here and now.

Instead, we see a focus on out groups and propaganda with overblown ideas about Antifa, (which is not a real threat at all) which are then exploited by these domestic terrorists to detract from their activities as a scapegoat and to sow confusion about what's really happening here. In fact, the danger concerning Antifa is how it can be used as a blanket term to target "enemies" of the state.

I think the DHS itself is proving to be a precarious tool and it is prone now to becoming nothing more than an extension of authoritarian, police state tactics and a club for a dictator to wield.. It's a two-edged sword now that could be turned against democracy and the people. It depends on who is in charge and how far they can subvert the original intent, if it was ever beneficial at all.

They're loud and obnoxious, but their numbers are small. I suspect they'll end up hanging themselves on their own petards, but perhaps not before they do something seriously stupid--too many guns and too few brain cells are a bad combo. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

7. The state of emergency was a good, proactive measure by Gov. Brown

Because it elevates the law enforcement chain of command to be under the direction of state police, removing the authority of Portland Police, who have been shown to be sympathetic to the Proud Boys.
