He trolled the first black president who represented the 'new diverse America' - one they view as a threat - and thus Trump became their hero.

So for them it's not really about Trump's past/resume/etc - but about the fact that they view him as a crusader against liberalism. He also has delivered for them bigtime on placing right-wing judges in the courts, 3 on scotus when all is said and done.

But that is his core base which is about 30% of the electorate. The scandals and his poor record as president do hurt him with moderates and swing voters (see the 2018 blue wave) especially in a polarized country where presidential elections are decided by small margins.
