Personal tax is presumably what you owe on your personal income tax return, the form 1040 individuals file. One example of possible weasel wording: Trump owed a million dollars in personal income tax but the tax was offset by a tax credit for 20% of Millions spent renovating an historic building, the DC post office converted to a hotel. The NYT thinks Trump’s lawyer may be claiming that he “paid” the million dollar tax by applying the tax credit against the liability. No normal human would call that “paying” the tax.

Trump can easily tell his accountants to release just page 1 and page 2 of his form 1040, which would reveal the truth.
