Just an observation re Covid

Discussion of the death rates for Covid 19 in the US seems to have dropped off the radar. It popped back on for me when I saw a short video of RWNJs, including a nurse, who said it's a hoax; it's just like the flu. This might come up in the debate tonight, so I thought a little recap would be handy.

Observations:
-- There have been 7,168,048 cases of Covid 19 in the US so far. Of these, 205,547 have died. That's a death rate (or whatever you want to call it) of 2.86%. That's bad enough, but think about the almost 7 million people who will confront a host of ailments for the rest of their lives. For some context, about 37 states have a population of 7 million or fewer. Think about that. The equivalent of entire state populations, or several state populations, will be dealing with the aftermath of Covid 19 for the rest of their lives. All of New Mexico, for example, or the entire population of northern New England. You get the idea.

-- If this was "just the flu," there would have been roughly 7,168 deaths. Big difference between 7,000+ and more than 205,000. But, hey, maybe it's just me.

-- As for "just the flu," a quick Google search tells us that maybe 34,000 people died of the flu during the 2018-2019 flu season. A large-ish number, especially if you or a family member are in that group, but still a far cry from more than 205,000 dead from Covid 19. And the Covid 19 season is, so far, never ending.

And now for some rhetorical questions:
-- What is so fucking hard to understand?
-- What would it take to reach the same conclusion that intelligent people reached long ago - this is a big fucking problem?
-- How can you all be so willfully stupid?
-- Would you also literally drink the Kool-Aid if you saw him add cyanide or would that also be a hoax?

I heard one of those too. "My ER is empty!"

cough. So... you're saying all those healthcare workers who are working extra shifts and risking their lives and going home and weeping about the patients who have died are ALL LYING???

What about the healthcare workers who have gotten sick themselves? ARE THEY JUST LYING?
What about the ones who have died? The doctors and nurses and other practitioners and staff? They're just lying about being dead?

Good lord.
Someone -- an acquaintance started saying that "hoax" thing, and I cut him off right away. I'm afraid I yelled. "So you think everyone is just LYING? The doctors, the nurses, the families, the patients? You think they're faking being on a ventilator? You think there's actually no one in that coffin?"

He backed away, muttering. I think I scared him. But there is stupidity, and there is criminal stupidity.

Substitute "climate change" for "pandemic" (or "evolution" or "scientific method" or "enlightenment thinking&quot and you get to roughly the same point...there are about 25-35% of the people in this country who are quite literally stupid AND ignorant and HATE when you try to end one of those two conditions.

A refresher - stupid people are basically dumb (low mental capacity to begin with), uninformed (intellectually lazy or incurious are also apt descriptions) and HIGHLY resistant to education because they feel their own limitations acutely and the pain of facing that they are not as smart as they think is too much to take...ignorant people are those who simply have been given no information or have not been exposed to truth, or have internalized false information; these Emmy-award winners are the ones that scream about Q-Anon and witches and demons and pedophile rings and get a pained, almost constipated expression on their faces when the truth manages to pierce the veil on them.

Rationale thought is not miscible in their toxic soup of a souls. Trying to get them to see the light through the reinforcing haze of their alternative 24/7/365 bubble is just wasting time.

Write them off. They won't be any use rebuilding society anyway, so focus your efforts on those who will retain value.
