Dan Rather: This was a sad, sad, sad night for this nation...

·

America is hurting, really hurting. Thousands of people are dying every week. Jobs lost. Lives thrown asunder. The West on fire. Our international standing at the lowest point I can remember. We need leadership. We need empathy. We need unity. We need justice. We need hope.

Who won and lost tonight in a horse race sense, I don't even want to address. Frankly, I don't give a damn. This was a sad, sad, sad night for this nation that I love with all my heart. This is a moment to mourn what we have lost, and are in danger of losing. I don't want to hear from the pundits, I want to hear from the people. I want to hug all of you in a warm embrace and say, we can, we must be a helluva lot better than this.

We need to dig deep into our moral character. We need to look at ourselves in the mirror and into the hearts of our neighbors and fellow citizens. We need to embrace a patriotism that is broad, inclusive, and just. We know bullies. We know when racists refuse to denounce racism. We know when autocrats try to undermine democracy.

There will be an election. And then there will be a future. No president is bigger than the nation. The American people have a voice. And after tonight, I sense millions are eager to turn their yelling at the television into marking their ballots.

as much as anyone. The sorrow he feels is because our Country has sank so low. HE was leaving winners and losers up to the pundits. The way I took it is that he thinks we are smart enough to know for ourselves who won that debacle.

I live in a rural southern area, and this "really hurting" moment often and intensely gets interrupted by the pervasive hard right mask-less agenda.

P.S. ( on edit when I look into the hearts of my immediate neighbors, I see bullies and hard right supporters. There is no redemption and I wouldn't even try to reason with them. I think I woke up this morning proud of Joe for standing through all that bullshit. I see no point in future debates.

when they congregate, they feel empowered.
This year, I do not see many of dump's banners; but the proud boys have a hidden agenda.

although one guy who runs a pest control business used to fly and wave his loyal Dump support.

This year he is doing the same, supporting the repug. downline candidates, & so far no sign of his huge Dump flag from 2016

By not being specific he infers that both were the cause of the sad moment, and we all know that it was all trump's doing. There is a reason the New York elite has never accepted that clown, and it is because he lacks ethics, education, manners, morals, he cannot open his mouth without uttering a lie, he is despicable, the champion of deplorables because no one is more deplorable than he.

So yes, very nice written, but I have come to the conclusion that in today's World you don't leave empty spaces in what you say or write, you don't allow people to interpret, everything must be specific, too many people have lost the ability to figure out by themselves, we are at a moment in human history where almost everything must be spelled.

I would not be surprised if someone, after reading this line "We know when racists refuse to denounce racism." would ask, who? who did not denounce racism?, so please, next time be more specific, we at DU understand who you are referring to, but people like Dan Rather need to start talking to the masses, to all those people who unless things are specific, they don't know what to do with the information.

(CNN)President Donald Trump turned his first debate with Democratic rival Joe Biden into a chaotic disaster.

Trump bullied, bulldozed and obfuscated his way through the 90-minute showdown, interrupting Biden and moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News at every turn. He ignored substantive questions and Biden's policy arguments, and instead swung at a straw-man version of Biden, taking aim at both Biden's son and a distorted description of his record that exists primarily in far-right media.
