He knew he couldn't win on substance or style, so he just came in like a wrecking ball and made a disgrace of the event. He slung all the mud and feces that he could possibly throw, and because Vice President Biden simply by being on stage couldn't just avoid being a part of it, he became an unwilling part of it.
And the reason for this was simply to turn people off, make them cynical, make them hate politics and voting and the Presidential election in general. For if the debate was a disaster and example of politics at it worst, the hope was that casual citizens would just be cynical and jaded and thus write off the election altogether.
And while that cuts against Trump--the instigator and the guilty party--it unfortunately also cuts against Biden, for no reason other than the fact that he was a bystander in the spectacle. For it is spun that he's somehow also "part of the problem," even though Trump--a politician who ran on the notion of being the anti-politician--is the one setting the scene.
This is a common tactic in so-called "managed democracies;" discredit things like truth and honesty in government to the dizzying extent that people just want to give up and not care anymore. And when they give up, it benefits the parties in power at that moment, because they know the status quo will allow them to continue to do the things that they have been doing. This is a favored tactic especially of Vladislav Surkov, a long-time associate of Vladimir Putin who has perfected the art of disinformation to a master level.
By the way, if anyone hasn't seen the HBO Documentary "Agents of Chaos" about the Russian operation to elect Donald Trump, I highly suggest that you do. While there wasn't much in there that I hadn't already known, the way it is presented makes the entire episode very easy to follow and--well, "entertaining" isn't the right word, so I'll just say "captivating."
