He's using the Hicks diagnosis as an opportunity to divert attention from recent events and perhaps to avoid doing more debates.
It's interesting to me they felt it necessary to produce a letter from the WH physician with his positive diagnosis but never bothered to produce proof of the negative ones.

Then he escapes with being able to say he has not lost an election. His ego doesn't take the hit, even if his immunity from prosecution does. But then Pence pardons him, campaigns in his stead, loses, and rides off into the sunset after the inauguration, which Trump has now avoided having to attend.
