I just heard on CNN's Fredricka Whitfield that because three of the Republicans

tested positive for COVID19, McConnell is asking for an agreement to pushback floor activity for two weeks until Oct. 19 - a pause in legislative business on the senate floor. In order to get that agreement he needs to get the top Democrat - Chuck Schumer - to sign off on it. In order to get her out of committee, Tillis and Lee would need to be actually present. Without them there, if Dems. decide not to show up for the vote that puts her getting out of the committee in jeopardy because they need an actual quorum. They need a vote with at least more than 1/2 of the members on the committee to be present. Lauren Fox - Congressional Reporter.

I don't have a thread. This was just on Fredricka Whitfield's show. I was pausing and typing as I heard it.....

put off the SCOTUS hearing for two weeks until Oct. 19 so there can be a quorum, but if the Dems don't show up even then there won't be a quorum?

I say sure, Chuck, go ahead and agree. Repugs like to play dirty, we can too.

This is what the reporter said, "In order to get her (Amy Coney Barrett) out of committee, Tillis and Lee (who have tested positive for COVID19) would need to be actually present. Without them there, if Democrats decide not to show up for the vote, that puts her getting out of the committee in jeopardy because they need an actual quorum. They need a vote with at least more than 1/2 of the members on the committee to be present." Lauren Fox - Congressional Reporter on CNN's Fredricka Whitfield's show this morning (10/3/20).

I completely admit I'm not well versed on congressional committees, how they work, etc. I'm just posting what I heard. I hope there's something to this....

And what appears to be a MAJOR point in all of this is that Chuck Schumer can absolutely NOT sign an agreement with McConnell allowing him to manipulate the dates.

If the Rethugs have at least one more person on the committee, if they can all show up they would have a quorum. Agreeing to the delay might give them time for the committee members with covid to heal enough to show up in person and vote because they could have their virtual hearings (buying more time) and then vote.

As of right now, if the Democratic committee members don't show up for the vote, there is no quorum, no vote, and the nomination sinks.

By waiting, the two sick Senators might get well enough to show up. As long as the Rethugs have 1 more member on the committee then the Democrats, they will not need Democrats to achieve a quorum and they will be able to vote her out of committee and send it to the floor for a full vote.

If the Rethugs get it out of committee, as long as nobody else defects, he will have the votes to put her on the bench.
