Feel free to interpret all those words as you wish. Simply curious how the disease has affected us here at DU.
So far, no one, in my life, in those categories has been diagnosed, that I know of. I am very lucky indeed.
ETA, after reading all the replies so far:
I just wanted to express my profound and sincere condolences to all who have lost others. Whether it's a family member, a co-worker, a friend, a casual acquaintance, or your dearest loved one, all of you have some level of grief and loss. It's truly a terrible disease to fall victim to, or even to suffer through and survive.
I want to speak now to lurkers (people who never participate and only read), particularly those who are Republican or who lean Republican:
THE COVID-19 VIRUS IS VERY REAL. Your family is at stake. YOUR LIFE IS AT STAKE. Please wear a mask and practice 6 feet of social distancing. Wearing a mask is MASCULINE AND MANLY for men, and totally appropriate for women. It expresses caring for others and yourself. Do you go into combat and wear no helmet or other protective gear ? Hell no. Same thing with our "combat" against this horrible virus.

(13,850 posts)husband and wife, had it. He was very very very sick. She wasn't too bad. It was scary. Other co-workers and people I know from kid's school had it, but nobody very close. I only know one person who died with it, and she was in her 80s, lived in a convalescent home, and suffered many other comorbidities. Luckily nobody we were close with passed. But knowing my friend and how close he felt to dying (and he was sick for over 20 days), this is something I do NOT want to take my chances with.

(566 posts)I tested positive back in March. I fly back and forth from San Francisco to either Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore twice a month for work. Hospitalized for a bit but no ventilator. Took about 3-4 weeks to feel myself again. Feels like a really bad flu and pneumonia at the same time. 4 others in my department contracted virus as well. Luckily, No one came even close to dying. Currently, Im 100% and marathon training and CrossFit. Im not elderly but no spring chicken either- female mid-40s.

(2,234 posts)One of my choir friends was the second case in her community. Her next-door neighbor who she had spent a day with was the first. She posted daily on FB, had mild symptoms and recovered in about ten days.
Another choir friend lost her husband to COVID. He had been in the hospital and was transferred to a rehab facility. The next day, someone at the facility tested positive, and he caught it that same day, was transferred back to the hospital, and died five days later.
In August, I lost a friend and former choir director. He was sick for three weeks and on a ventilator for almost the entire time. It hit him hard and fast, probably due to several risk factors.

Recently, we had an acquaintance contract Covid. This was someone with whom we occasionally shared group dinners, a church group. He died in less than two weeks post-diagnosis. He had a mild heart condition going into the hospital. Ultimately, his heart and other organs gave out.

(1,243 posts)(probably from their grandchildren), he recovered, she passed in mid-April.
My son, age 33, in early March had horrible flu symptoms, loss of taste and smell; terribly sick and weak for about 4 weeks. No tests were available at that time.

(1,672 posts)He had an underlying condition. That was in April.
My friend's 63-year-old brother-in-law died at the end of March within a few days of getting sick. He was the 2nd covid-19 death in his county. His wife/my friend's sister was positive, but asymptomatic.
Another friend's grandson tested positive in the summer. Other than those cases, I don't personally know of anyone else.
We wonder if our youngest had it in January. He had moved to NYC and within 3 weeks was very sick. He hasn't had an antibody test.

(76,706 posts)One death; an 84 year old women in late stages of dementia mostly bedridden. A pneumonia risk already. She died of pneumonia as a complication of COVID.
The other person is a hostess at a nearby restaurant. But, she got it at least 6 weeks after Illinois closed these places. She's late 30s I think. She said it was like a rough fly, but only for a few days.
Another 2 were a husband & wife in town. I know him from the golf course. He's a closing in on retirement IT guy who worked from home all but 3 days since mid-March. His wife still works, but I forget what she does.
They both were positive and felt rotten for about a week, but the list of symptoms for each were very different. They both had the symptoms hit overnight. His biggest symptom was massive fatigue. He could wake up, walk to the bathroom, and come back, and that would make tired enough to fall asleep again. She had bad headaches and GI issues.
None of the last 3 had the loss of smell & taste we read about.
The 5th was a teacher I know from the town 8 miles west. She's fine now. A couple days sick, then 12 days at home. (The three days prior were at home.)
She started feeling awful on the drive to work, and she only lives 15 miles away. She was self-aware enough to call from the parking lot to say she thinks she shouldn't go in the building. They agreed and sent her to the place that does their testing. So fortunately, she never exposed anybody that day, which was the Tuesday after Labor Day. So, she hadn't been to school for 3 & 1/2 days. They had no other positives at the middle school. (One at the HS)
They dodged a bullet, it appears.

(18,690 posts)Yes, covid killed my nephew at age 52.
But my husband had a COVID-19 test this morning at 9:00 at his primary care doctor's office. (He said the nasal swab was extremely uncomfortable.)
He has been having symptoms for two days of sore throat, headache, cough, and fatigue, and two weeks ago he went on a group motorcycle day trip where he was probably the only person wearing a mask. I told him it would be a good idea to get tested because of his age and high blood pressure. (He is 66.)
They said they will call us with the results.
I worry a lot about my Trump-supporting mother and sister because they don't believe the virus is a big deal.
I would like to say how sorry I am for those in this thread who have lost family members and friends to this virus. It is heartbreaking and makes me feel very sad for them. I offer my love from afar.

(8,561 posts)I learned about one infection today; a young single mother who lives across the street, studying to be a medical technician. Asymptomatic so far and quarantining.
These three confirmed cases were all acquaintances. But Mr. Femmedem lost a fairly close friend to a pneumonia several months ago. He tested negative, but the doctors couldn't figure out what was causing the pneumonia and we suspect he may have had a false negative. He had been hospitalized, then released and was feeling ok, then relapsed and died, all in the space of about three weeks.

(35,145 posts)That's it for now.
My daughter's father-in-law passed from it. They called his son to the hospital to say goodbye.- then wouldn't let him see him. Death via cell phone scene.
My best friend's wife appears to have it. He's a mess.
We think we had it last February. We were all sick. Not sick enough for the hospital. Doc thought the testing was too unreliable to be worthwhile and the risk if we didn't have it wasn't worth it unless we got worse. We've never been tested for the antibodies. We behave as if we didn't get it using PPE, etc even though odds are, we probably did.
BIL had it and died.
Different BIL had both parents die from it.

She was in a nursing home w/ heart trouble and Alzheimer's Disease.

I don't know if she technically counts as a COVID death, but I do believe that the virus accelerated her decline.

(65,912 posts)Hope to keep it that way. The risk in Montgomery County PA isnt what it once was, but it is still good to be careful. And the zip codes around me are among the fastest rising in the county.
I am in my 40s and have a couple risk factors but I have had so many colds where I lost taste and smell that maybe I have some resistance. I practice mask wearing, hand washing, using hand sanitizer, and distancing. Also have type O blood which they say is good.

(7,191 posts)had a guest from Norway in March when COVID was spreading like wildfire in Europe. Four days after he left, they both became very ill. At that time, the guidelines for getting tested or being admitted to the hospital were so strict, they couldn't find out for sure and just had to tough it out at home. I've been isolating since....
Hekate
(100,133 posts)...a couple of times and they finally admitted her for 5 days as having severe asthma veering into COPD. They treated her with steroids and oxygen; she was absolutely craving oxygen. Ran tests, including swabbing for COVID, which she likened to having her brain scraped, but nothing came back positive. -Until about a month ago, when a blood test showed antibodies for COVID. Shes recovered, but not 100%, especially her lungs.
One of my brothers in law, here in SoCal, may or may not have had it. As far as he is concerned, he had a killer case of pinkeye for a month-plus this summer. We dont see him for months at a time, but he seems to be okay last we heard.

(16,408 posts)I don't know who it was but a few months ago someone tested positive that worked in the office across the hall. Everyone in that office and the people in the building that had contact with them had to test and quarantine and the their office and all the room they'd been in were sealed off for deep cleaning. I don't know what the outcome was other than if they'd died we would've gotten a mass email. Early in the crisis someone in another office was informed they'd tested positive. So it was the same routine of testing, quarantining and deep cleaning. A few days later the got a call saying they'd mixed up their results with someone else and they didn't have Covid19 after all.
This was after most people had already gotten tested and the room was cleaned. It caused a lot of panic for nothing.

Covid killed my sister's business partner.
One of my nieces had it bad. She wasn't hospitalized, but she did the E.R. for about a day.
One of my children got it from some student just before everything shut down in California in March. Got a flu-like case, with coughing for weeks.
My wife is a health care professional who is seeing covid patients every day. It's chaos at her work, utter chaos. She get's home from work, throws her stuff and most of her clothes in the "biohazard" bin, and heads straight for the shower. Her work is still having trouble getting adequate personal protective equipment.
How long has it been now?
