Because so many senate republicans (3) are falling victim to corona virus they're spooked about gatherings now. McConnell has delayed legislation for the Covid relief bill they were supposed to be working on until October 19th at the earliest.
However, he said hearings to confirm the Supreme Court nominee will begin Oct 12 as scheduled, virus be damned.
What if enough republicans fall ill that confirmation is impossible? I'm not sure how close it will be. Perhaps someone here who knows more than me about senate proceedings can handicap the effort.

Sounds like this is a "Senate-wide quarantine".
