You know, what Trump is doing makes an extreme sort of sense.

If he stays in WR through the whole course of the disease and survives, he still loses the presidency and his life is over. If he pretends to fight off the COVID and, in a one-in-a-million (billion?) shot actually fakes it until he makes it, he probably wins the presidency and goes down in history as the Aryan Ubermensch he believes himslf to be. In his royded-up brain that probably sounds like a good gamble.

Americans are smarter, by and large, than both the major media outlets and the Trump campaign assume.

I agree that the optics are better for him to be handling this at the White House than WR. I think his biggest mistake, he realizes, was going to WR and now he's trying to correct it. We'll see how things go at the White House. Either way, we're not going to being seeing much of Trump the next couple weeks.

Not him in the flesh maybe, but a never-ending stream of surrogates will invade our living rooms with the latest breathless updates. They are going to milk this for every second of coverage they possibly can.

The assistant to the assistant of the deputy vice-chair of the marketing department has been kept hermetically sealed for just this occasion.

...is going to hurt him. Look at how antsy people got at just a couple days of not really getting substantive news about Trump's condition. Just wait when Friday rolls around and we've seen little of Trump. Then wait even more when the presidential debate hits and Trump still hasn't left the White House.

There is still the possibility for this whole saga to end up in one of the most mind-blowing comeuppances of all time.

I’m in danger of a schadenfreude overdose.
