(35,176 posts)This hit me hard in a different place. When I was working as a critical care nurse we were always busy but there was always time to sit and hold someone's hand as they died. The only way that did not happen is if it was a code blue situation or the family made it in. I have held so many hands and stroked so many heads or arms as people die. This is the part that I do think must be the worst, being alone. I can guarantee if there is a nurse free anywhere they do not die alone but still, it is in no way close to having a loved one there.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
