still hurts pretty good at the insertion site. My daughter says some years hurt more than others. Yours hurt?

(12,265 posts)I did get my pneumonia shot the same day which is why I thought it hurt more this time. Husband's hurt more as well.

(3,182 posts)My arm usually does hurt for a day or two after the flu shot. This year I got the stronger shot for the oldies but goodies and it didnt hurt a bit. I was surprised.

(3,584 posts)I need both. Should I get them at the same time, which my pharmacy has been lobbying me to do, or space them out?

(12,051 posts)I made the mistake of hitting my shoulder on a door frame. %^&$#@*&!! I saw stars.
My husbands hurt for a day or two, mine, nothing. I think it has to do with how relaxed
you made yourself be when they administered the shot. We are both over 65 so we got the super duper old persons shot.

(2,539 posts)the nurse told me to keep moving my arm after.
I did that and it worked. I still had a small bruise where I got the injection, but that's probably because I take blood thinners.
The shot is intramuscular- so moving your arm and massaging the site gently should help.

(23,649 posts)but it bruised pretty good ... which i expected since the nurse stayed 6' social distanced and launched it like a dart 🎯 ...

I don't look so that could be it.

(9,256 posts)Within two hours of a flu shot, I always get pain in my arm and across my shoulders and upper back. I know to take Tylenol and rest as soon as I get home, and it will be better by the next morning. Had my shot yesterday. Still slightly sore this morning, but not too bad. Its crappy, but still better than the flu, ya know?

(29,566 posts)Several years ago I started getting a red, hot, painful swelling reaction at the injection site and a few inches in circumference.
Apparently that is a normal reaction for some. So, I always pre-medicate with a single Benadryl 25mg an hour or so in advance of the time i expect to get the shot.
It helps a bit, but I still get pain and some swelling and pinkness at the site. Just not as bad as that first time.
They also say to massage the injection area to work in the actual fluid so it disperses and causes less pain, and also WORK your arm-clenching and doing press-ups against a wall. For the same reason. I do that for the first 10 minutes and promptly go on about my day forgetting all about keeping up the exercise. So, I still have a painful first night of sleep when i accidentally roll over on to that arm.
I was warned this year that streaking down the arm is not normal and must be evaluated by a doc. So, watch for that. Apparently It is a rare abnormal reaction.
Feel better soon!

(1,524 posts)I took the high dose and within 6 hours my right shoulder was swollen, red, and very sore. I also ran a fever that started at 101.1 that night. Next day my average temp ran right at 102. Roughly 48 hours later I hit 103.1.
But i didnt have the flu. No cough, no lung congestion. However, I had fever, chills, body aches. My bodys immune system to responded to the dead virus.
Took 5 days before I stopped running any fever.
Be glad you got off with a sore arm.
Did you get the stronger senior version?
Senior.

(108,990 posts)Sometimes people tend to protect the arm on the day of the shot, but the best thing is to move it around and help the injection circulate.
This is too late to help you now, but just in case it might help for next year . . .
pwb
(11,287 posts)I drove home and went for a pit stop but after that not so much movement. Next time, I still keep refusing the shingles shot, some here mentioned they hurt a bit.

(14,628 posts)It was injected rather high in my arm, almost in my shoulder, and stupid me, I forgot that my left shoulder hurts all the time anyway due to a back injury. I should have asked her to inject in the right side.

(10,500 posts)It didn't hurt at all. I barely felt the needle go in and there was no pain whatsoever afterwards.
pwb
(11,287 posts)It seems different is the main reaction. The needles are great now.
A lot of factors go into it, including the precise location of the insertion.

(4,399 posts)I also got a massive swelling in one ear and on the side of my neck that lasted for two or three days. I couldn't turn my head side to side and I was exhausted. I get the shot most years but have never had a reaction that severe before.

Just got the Flu and Pneumonia shot yesterday @ CVS as I do annually around this time of year. A day later, still in numbing type pain that I don't remember in previous years. DU has always provided a community of like-minded patriots (used in the proper manner) and the feeling of being in this together is a major plus and "a good thing". - - M. Stewart.
