General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI was wrong about Vice President Biden.
During the primary I was a supporter of Mayor Pete Buttigieg and also liked Sen. Kamala Harris. I posted several times here that I thought the party voters were making a huge mistake in picking VP Biden. My husband and I are in our late 30s/early 40s and we were convinced that the party needed new blood and that Vice President Biden was too old and out of touch to take on Trump and win. I liked personally VP Biden but thought he was too weak and old school to best Trump. I thought there would be no excitement for him and I was convinced he would lose.
I was wrong. Very wrong.
Not only has VP Biden shown he is far from weak or too old, he is proving himself to be the singular best person for this moment in time to take on Trump. His sincerity, strength of character, steadiness, and decency are exactly what this country needs right now. While I still love Buttigieg, Harris, Warren and frankly most of the other Democratic Primary opponents Biden faced I dont think any of them could be quite the perfect contrast to Trump that VP Biden has shown himself to be.
I always knew I was voting for whoever the Democratic Candidate would be. When VP Biden became that candidate I thought I would vote with no excitement. I was so wrong. I am very excited to vote for VP Biden to become the next President, the man for the moment, the man I truly believe this country needs. I hope there are a lot of voters out there like me.

Sincerity, strength of character, decency, etc. Not that the other candidates didn't possess those characteristics but I always felt if Biden had been the nominee in '16 we would have won and largely avoided the mess we're in. Early on in the primaries I was nervous Sanders (nothing against him--just felt he was too liberal too win in the general) was going to win, and when Biden finally got going it was a major relief. And now he's maintained one of the most consistent leads ever in a presidential election. We do indeed need his calm leadership now more than ever. Take it home Uncle Joe!

(14,565 posts)Hard to believe that was nearly a year ago. Bus load of older whites. Naples is very conservative. Golf demographics are heavily right wing. To my amazement, maybe 15 of them began discussing politics, and specifically the Democratic debate from one night earlier. The consensus was that they could support a Democrat above Trump, but only if it was Biden or Bloomberg.
All the others were announced as, "too far out there," meaning too far liberal. That "too far out there" phrase in particular drew loud unanimous agreement.
I was still aligned with Klobuchar at that point, but realistically I began hoping for Biden or Bloomberg. Anyone but Bernie Sanders. He was the epitome of "too far out there" and would collapse every race in Florida 2020, plus send the Cuban community against Democrats for at least a full generation. I can't tell you how scared I was of Sanders being the nominee.
IMO, Bloomberg would have done great against Trump also. Obviously it would have been a totally different type of race. I'll settle for this smooth running classy Biden campaign. But Bloomberg spending a billion plus to viciously define Trump every day of the race would have been fun also. Plus imagine Bloomberg jumping on that story of Trump's phony wealth, and $421 million debt.
Biden has found a strong voice and really impressed me. I was worried he'd be the Democratic version of Bob Dole in 1996...good guy but not special enough to be elected president.

(22,493 posts)Perfect to me. But my stated preference was Biden. I stated then that this country was raw and bleeding from the unending hatefulness, the lies, the corruption. Biden was the best prescription to our illness. Of course, things have played out much worse... protests for justice, assault on civilians, bribing Ukraine, a corrupt DoJ, Covid. No one could have foreseen how desperately we'd need a seasoned politician, a large soul, compassion, empathy, willing to listen to his more progressive opponents, of an admirable character that sensible Republicans can appreciate...thanks to all the Republican groups getting out the message that Biden is better than Trump. Biden has a universal appeal that Sanders or Warren or Buttigieg or Bloomberg or Bevo wouldn't have had. Biden has primaried before. It seems like it was meant to be that he was still available at this moment in time when everything about him is what the country needs.

What I like most about Biden is that he listens. He is just a good person and everyone who knows him or has met him, likes him. For better or worse, he is the "anti-Hillary" and I say that knowing that what happened to Hillary Clinton was completely wrong and all about lies and sexism. Trump has no way of attacking Biden. All the smears and lies that he has made up, have no affect on Biden because Biden is a known quantity and everyone knows that Trump's lies are LIES.
Remember that Hillary had similar negatives to Trump. COMPLETELY UNDESERVED but still... Biden doesn't have that problem.

(10,828 posts)I've read quite a few people across the board on varying and different sites express pretty much the same thing. That's all for the good because it means Joe Biden has effectively shown the electorate what kind of man he is, what sort of leader he is and will become and what a stark contrast that is to Donald Trump's chaos machine. I think most Americans are exhausted by Trump's nonsense, genuinely worried about his state of mind and inability to take on even the simple tasks of governing.
Joe Biden is an old hand at this. He doesn't attempt to hide his age or make excuses for it. But with that age, he brings the experience of governing we'll need to pick up the pieces and build the joint back better. With Kamala Harris at his side, he's tipping his hat to a new generation of leaders, to women and people of color. I expect we'll see this underscored when he names his cabinet candidates. Mayor Pete is already on the transition team and I fully expect all our candidates to have meaty roles in the way forward.
We have a stable of really excellent people. Again, I fully expect Joe Biden to tap all the talent and give credit where credit is due. Because he doesn't have an ego to protect.
It's going to be a huge job to repair, restore and rebuild this country while pushing energetically toward the future. Biden has said he sees himself as a transition candidate. On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if Biden is far bolder than people expect him to be in resolving problems, refashioning a more just society and demanding a leadership role in healthcare, immigration, climate change, gun regulation, etc. We know he's a decent man. People are beginning to understand he's precisely the leader we need.
This is Joe Biden's moment. I just know in my gut he's going to work his heart out. For everyone.

(24,653 posts)I live in a county that went 16 points for Trump. He'll win here again, but I predict a single digit margin. And in a swing state, that type of decline could make all the difference.
Within 500 steps of my house (I have a FitBit), there are:
At least five Trump voters who are not just voting against Trump, they are excited to vote for Biden. One is particularly vocal and an absolute joy to talk to as his enthusiasm seems to radiate from every atom in his body. The zeal of the convert. LOL!
Three new voters (18 and 19 years old) who really really wanted a younger and more progressive candidate are all in for Biden. One is text-banking and one is writing postcards.
One Gary Johnson voter who thought he was going to hold his nose to vote for Biden and disclosed to me just last week how much he thinks Biden is the perfect person at the perfect time.
I have yet to encounter anyone who did not vote for Trump in 2016 who plans to vote for him in 2020. I know they're likely to keep a much lower profile if they exist, but instinct tells me if you weren't charmed by him in 2016 there's not much there to charm you now.
I really wanted Elizabeth Warren, but have also come to see that Biden is the perfect contrast to Trump. And that may be exactly what we needed. Biden is the very definition of decency. I too was afraid that he lost some of the fire in his belly. But as time has gone on over the past couple of months, I realize that he has become an even more determined candidate.
