(32,715 posts)Emperor Caligula
Cruel and tyrannical Emperor Caligula ruled Ancient Rome through fear and terror. Rampaging through Rome committing murder, adultery and acts of debauchery, his reign came to an abrupt end when he was brutally assassinated after only four years.

I'll have to.

It's great!
The novel by Robert Graves, which the series is based upon, is excellent. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I,_Claudius
Here's the wiki write-up about the series. It was a big deal in the mid to late 70s and PBS showed it as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I,_Claudius_(TV_series)
********
Graves himself lived a very interesting life, moving to Mallorca in his later years, where he raised his children with his second wife, Beryl. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Graves
His daughter, Lucia, is a writer and translator. If you have read the English versions of the novels Carlos Ruiz Zafon, you have read her translations. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucia_Graves

(26,289 posts)I'm a huge history buff and have always been fascinated by the Roman Empire.
I just re-discovered the 'Elizabeth R' series that I have on video tape. Unfortunately. Doubt I'll ever find another VCR player. I'd like to replace that, and find the 'Six Wives of Henry VIII' on DVD.

(15,373 posts)I have that one on DVD too!
Love them both. Historically, "I, Claudius" is set later. But we can see that the plotting and backstabbing is universal.
