Their influence on gullible Americans will need to be dealt with for a long time I am sorry to say. But the sooner we start, the better it will be for the country.

The Fairness Doctrine did not apply to cable networks. Only broadcast networks that used the public airwaves were subject to the Fairness Doctrine.

However, it DID apply to those AM hate-radio stations!

How do we get rid of it or reclassify it? Man, now I'm depressed.

The Fairness Doctrine’s original purpose was to ensure that stations broadcasting on the public airwaves would present multiple perspectives. Its purpose was to guard against the kind of polarized news coverage we have now. But it never applied to cable stations or networks.

That would apply to a lot of local affiliates, but not to the cable-based Fox News Channel.

The fairness doctrine existed because the spectrum was a natural resource that needed protection from monopolization. It was the rise of non-broadcast information channels like cable networks that provided the rationale for dispensing with that protection.

Private cable channels were effectively in the same category as newspapers: no public resource was involved, so they could be as biased as they wanted to be.

Closing the 24/7 blatherthon would still help, as would stifling the leeway RW religious stations feel they have.

So I guess the only way to undo Fux is to go after the Murdoch family. That is what Judd Apatow does, he blames Lachlan Murdoch and addresses him in his tweets about Fux BS.
