(5,058 posts)Maybe it does to his base that Fox News already told them that. But normal Americans would go "huh?".

(31,261 posts)About 21 million Americans got the novel Swine Flu, around 12,800 died from it over about 1 year. The Obama Administration went to mitigation procedures right away and that saved lives, as the procedures broke the contagion loop and burned the virus out.

(1,235 posts)as deadly as COVID. 12,500 died. Biden said this in the first debate

(28,271 posts)And that wasn't with counting the fatalities day to day, but an estimate after the whole thing was over.
Covid's final count will end up being much higher than the preliminary numbers that we have now. Not even remotely comparable.

(6,319 posts)I certainly never saw any business or schools closed because of it, travel restrictions or masks, etc. I dont recall job losses due to h1n1. All I remember it was just a form of flue which is different each year anyway. I never even thought about it for or had any concern at all. And I think most voters have not either so pence did himself a disservice here. He just appealed to trumps hardcore base, they already got them.

(1,789 posts)when Americans can't remember any other time we all had to wear masks and cancel baseball.

(15,623 posts)because it killed a few kids early on. IIRC, they figured out pretty quickly that it was significantly less deadly than ordinary seasonal flu. Pence speaks as though Obama and Biden's response to a much deadlier pandemic disease would be exactly the same as their response to H1N1, which of course is ridiculous and he knows it.

(93,532 posts)... the infected and a way to stop it from spreading as fast as it could.
The world didn't fall apart like it has with CV19 because of the way H1N1 was treated at first.
H1N1 was less deadly than CV19 though and only 13,000 Americans died and the flu season that year was a non event.

(13,369 posts)It was the wimpyist flu I ever had. Symptoms were not bad at all. Little cough sputum low fever for a day. No body aches or chills. It was not that bad.

(12,327 posts)I dont think anyone believes it. Republicans and Fox News play along, and MAGATs probably believe it, but most people who lived during that time know it wasnt anything like COVID.

(28,271 posts)I was taking them in for well visits and WIC visits and shots all the time and never worried about it.
Now they're eleven, distance learning, and a huge ordeal just to get them a booster that they need because we're so worried about possibly killing their grandma if we pick up something at the Dr's office.
Pence is a total liar.

(15,374 posts)Felt like death warmed over for almost two weeks, and felt off for another month, but it wasn't as bad as the pneumonia I caught when I was 20. I didn't feel like I was drowning for what seemed like hours, and the while the fever and body ache was bad, but not like the almost unbearable skin on fire fever I developed with the pneumonia.
H1N1 killed, what, 20k people in the US, over the period of a year and a half in the time before the ACA was rolled out? And believe me, inability to access healthcare until it was too late was a major cause of needless death or incapacitation prior to the ACA for Americans who couldn't get insurance through their jobs or the Government.
COVID has already killed 10x that in 6 months. They're not very close to being comparable.
