I am an RN for a surgical ophthalmic group. It appears to me ( and NO I am not diagnosing him ) that he has s sub conjuntival hemorrhage which is common in older folks. It can be caused by many reasons. I'm not saying that is what he has, but by looking at the TV this is what it looks like. Sometimes coughing and sneezing can cause the vessels to burst. Looking red and scary. It usually resolves itself in a few days of onset.

Conjuntivitis can not be diagnosed by looking at someone that may a have a red eye. It can ONLY be diagnosed by a doctor with a slit lamp!
